Glad to see you blog some miles again. We sure miss you and Kelly down at Painter's on Sat. Have a GREAT week!

From Jon A on Tue, Jan 26, 2010 at 00:04:43 from 66.182.65.44

Smooth, We missed being there. I've been putting miles in, just not writting them into the blog. That's going to start changing, starting in two weeks I'll start back running/ maybe training. Kelly and I are going to run some races, maybe even a marathon. It would be great if we could get a lehi group like the BBK's.

I had some minor surgery today and am not permited to run right now, dr and Kelly said two weeks but we'll see.

Anyway, good job on your race. :-)

From Smooth on Tue, Jan 26, 2010 at 00:12:18 from 174.23.232.65

Hope you're healing fast and well from the surgery. Better listen to the doc and Kelly knows best!

It will be cool to have a LBK group here. Which marathon are you and Kelly thinking about?

From Kelli on Thu, Jan 28, 2010 at 14:21:19 from 71.219.89.82

Somehow I missed this entry! GOOD JOB Jon and Kelly!!!!

From Jon A on Thu, Jan 28, 2010 at 14:23:19 from 67.214.249.195

You didn't miss much. :-)

Your running is coming along good!

From Kelli on Thu, Jan 28, 2010 at 14:24:11 from 71.219.89.82

Yeah, I am sick of running. What to do?????

From Jon A on Thu, Jan 28, 2010 at 14:28:40 from 67.214.249.195

You sure run a lot for someone that is "sick" of it.

From Kelli on Thu, Jan 28, 2010 at 14:41:24 from 71.219.89.82

more miles=more ice cream

From Jon A on Thu, Jan 28, 2010 at 14:43:28 from 67.214.249.195

Yeah, I subscribe to that theory too!

From Smooth on Sun, Jan 31, 2010 at 23:36:21 from 174.23.232.65

How ya doing? Are you recovering well from the minor surgery?

From Jon A on Mon, Feb 01, 2010 at 12:45:29 from 67.214.249.195

Hey Smooth,

Recovery is coming along slowly. I hope to get out running next Monday/Tues. I have my follow up appointment with the DR on Tues so I may have to wait, but if I can talk "Dr Kelly" into it I will get out as soon as I can. :-)

From Smooth on Mon, Feb 01, 2010 at 12:53:27 from 174.23.232.65

I know it's harder to ask for permission than forgiveness...but, in this case, Dr. Kelly knows best. Better listen to her...you won't be sorry! :)

Speedy recovery to you and have a GREAT week!

From Kelli on Tue, Feb 09, 2010 at 18:38:37 from 71.219.89.82

HI JON!

From Jon A on Tue, Feb 09, 2010 at 18:44:12 from 67.214.249.195

Hey Kelli, In a couple weeks I am going to be up to 8+ miles on Sat, maybe I can talk you and Scott and Smooth (and anyone else) to running JRP.

I got the ok from the Dr to test the running waters, so Kelly and I are getting going, wont take long. :-)

From Kelli on Tue, Feb 09, 2010 at 18:45:44 from 71.219.89.82

Scott has not run for 4 weeks now and he is going to take one more week off, so that will probably be PERFECT for us. I have run on my own a lot lately and it STINKS!!! We would love to come down and I am sure Smooth and Teena would come.

From Jon A on Tue, Feb 09, 2010 at 18:48:12 from 67.214.249.195

Why has Scott taken time off?

I'm going out tonight, hope to go 5 miles, would like to go without a walk break, we'll see.

From Smooth on Tue, Feb 09, 2010 at 18:48:19 from 174.23.239.148

Count me in! So much funner to have company on long runs.

SO HAPPY to hear you got the ok from the Dr.

From Kelli on Tue, Feb 09, 2010 at 18:52:36 from 71.219.89.82

Scott tore his calf muscle in November, took 3 weeks off, came back way too hard and fast, re-injured it, took 2 weeks off, re-injured it again. So, he was supposed to run today (4 weeks of no running) but last Thursday he once again hurt his SI joint lifting weights (did the same thing two days before the Utah Valley Marathon last year), so he is out another week. The guy is NUTS.

From Jon A on Tue, Feb 09, 2010 at 18:54:24 from 67.214.249.195

He is crazy! That had to hurt! OUCH. He will be back to 50 mile weeks in no time.

From Jon A on Tue, Feb 09, 2010 at 18:56:08 from 67.214.249.195

Smooth, I'll keep you posted. Kelly and I will start running tonight, we will run in the eve's and some mornings. Hope to see you out and about.

From Smooth on Tue, Feb 09, 2010 at 19:01:43 from 174.23.239.148

Good deal! Enjoy your run tonight!

Kelli, I had NO idea Scott got injured so many times. STINKS! Will he be ready for Boston?

From Kelli on Tue, Feb 09, 2010 at 19:01:49 from 71.219.89.82

He is really worried about Boston, but he is a die hard and will be back to kicking my trash in a few weeks. However, I am going to force him to keep the miles low and the pace slow for the rest of this month at least!

Good luck tonight!!!

Kelly and ran down into some housing area in Lehi that she had not been in before, looked like a gated community.  Turns out to be a nice neighborhood.  Had some good uphill sections.  I think I would like to find a route that includes this area, and use it to see improvement.  Enough uphill and down that will make for decreasing time a challenge after awhile.

Hey Smooth, I sure wish I could make it. I have Klondike this weekend. :-( But I'll be having fun in the snow. I think I will get up before everyone else and run up or down more Payson canyon. Maybe have to do snowshoe running.

I'll think about all you running JRP!

Kelly and I did some cross training at home.  Got the exercise ball out and did crunches and planks, then did some plyometrics (don't know if I spelled that correct).  Those kill me!  Then did lunges and another ball exercise.  That last one is tough.  Laying on the ball forearms on the ground, hips on the ball, feet spread and toes touching the ground.  Keeping legs straight I had to lift them up and as high as possible and then bring them together above and behind me and touch heels.  Wow that takes some strength.  I feel like such a wimp.  Kelly knocks these things out like its nothing and I would like to just die.

Arms are tired from the dips.  I think I should put that off until well into the summer when I don't have these extra winter pounds.  :-)

Have a great day, and weekend.

Running MilesSwimming YardsBike Miles

Kelly and I ran with her friend Deb.  We started off thinking we would run 8 miles on streets, but then we all thought it would be fun to try some trails.  Wellllllllll, we started up this trail and Deb said we can take this to the top of Suncrest, then have a nice downhill back.  In the middle and as far as I was concerned to far in to turn back (I thought we were headed to the top of Suncrest THE ROAD, turns out Deb meant a trail back) we encountered snow packed trails and fairly deep here and there.  Big hills.  I was looking forward to the road/street for the run back home.  Finally got to the road, after doing some cross country.  Noticed my watch had 2.14 miles on it.  I'm slow, but I think that I covered MORE miles than 2.14 in that hour.  So I reset my watch.  Ran the roads back to the car and I had about 5.1 miles on that leg.  So I decided that it had to be something close to the same on the out.

Overall a  good run.

I don't know what to use for a conversion on the bike (actually spin) miles.  Kelly and I did the spin class at the fitness center, about an hour.  Then ran a mile.  Then did some weights.  Arm curls and dips.  Then the dreaded planks.  (I had some pulling in the abdomen so I called that off.) (but then we both did an alternate tummy burner.)  Then we did three sets of 15 frog jumps (ply-o-metrics - not sure how to spell that)  Those kick my hinny BIG time.

From Jon A on Sat, Mar 06, 2010 at 18:05:58 from 66.182.65.44

Thanks Jun, I keep checking in on you and you are amazing with your running. I can't wait to see the crazy amazing things you do this year, time and distance!

Kelli, bummer you guys aren't going to be down there.

It would be fun to get together. I really want to run with you guys. I need Kelly to run with some seasoned woman like you and Smooth. She has some really good speed and endurance in her, but she doesn't believe me. And I keep telling her she needs to talk to you guys about girl clothes. So, I'm going to convince her to run JRP or something with you, do you think that will be ok? I say convince because she is intimidated by running right now.

Anyway, it would be good to get together either way, or even none running event.

From Kelli on Sat, Mar 06, 2010 at 18:11:04 from 71.219.89.82

Hand Kelly over to me for a run, I will show her what she is made of!! Anyone who can bike like her can surely run just as well. Smooth is a genius when it comes to running clothes (I am a cheapskate, but Target is awesome!!!) We need to plan a run soon. We were there a few weekends ago, we will do it again soon.

Scott is on week 2 of running since tearing his calf and taking almost 2 months off. So, I am sure you two could keep each other company.

The Lehi JRP now stops just about a half a mile in on the north side. We were able to get through it thanks to Crockett and his mountain goat skills, but I am not sure for how long. The south side is still shut down 4 miles out. It is a bummer they are building all those new roads out there, it is messing with our perfect trail!

From Jon A on Sat, Mar 06, 2010 at 18:36:54 from 66.182.65.44

What? JRP north is under construction? That stinks!

I will get with you and coordinate a time we can go running, maybe a Sat up your way. Kelly could use the advice and encouragement from a good runner like you. That stuff coming from me only goes so far. Thanks.

From Kelli on Sun, Mar 07, 2010 at 11:49:04 from 71.219.89.82

It does stink that it is under construction, it is one of the easiest places to get in a long run with FUEL.

Let us know, I would love to go run and chat with Kelly!

From Smooth on Tue, Mar 09, 2010 at 19:23:28 from 174.23.198.220

Kelly and I ran the Spectrum 10k.  Kelly did awesome.  Bettered her last year time by 4 minutes.  I think she has more speed in her.

I started slower than last year, I don't feel like I am nearly as ready as I was last year, so I thought I should keep it easier at first and have some at the end.  But like last year I still didn't have juice at the end.  I did see a guy try and pass me in the finish shute, but I wasn't gonna let him by without a fight.  I managed a dead sprint for the last 100 feet.  :-)

HI JON!

5.250.000.00

Ran to the fitness center (3 miles) met Kelly and ran (2.25) the indoor track while she lifted weights.

First time running alone for awhile.  Have been running with Kelly, averaging 25-30 miles a week and increasing.  We both made it into SG, so we are following a 20 wk schedule for that training.  We need to find some fellow Lehi-ans for some group runs.

Hope all is well out here in FRB land.

Ran to the fitness center again by myself.  Met Kelly there.  She did weights.  I had some fun letting a hill take me for a FAST 200 yrds or so.  I think I was something close to 4:25 pace.  (well that is what Garmin says that pace was)  The hill is steep and I didn't want to loose control, but wanted to experiment with quicker turnover.  I never felt out of control, so it was fun.  Average pace was just under 8.

Have a great day!

How's Kelly doing? How did the *procedure* go?

From Jon A on Tue, Jun 15, 2010 at 11:19:09 from 67.214.249.195

Hi Smooth, Kelly is doing well. The "procedure" went well. Found NOTHING, which is good and bad. Good because its not cancer, polyps or any of those other yucky things. Bad because they couldn't fix anything. Bad because we don't know what is causing the bleeding. More questions than answers. :-

From Smooth on Tue, Jun 15, 2010 at 11:57:28 from 174.23.236.38

I'm happy NO *yucky* things found!

Darn it that they have no answers for the bleeding. If it was me, I'd press for more answers. How's the integrity of the GI tract? Where is the source of the bleed? What can be done to either find the cause and stop the bleed?

Best wishes!

From Jon A on Tue, Jun 15, 2010 at 12:15:43 from 67.214.249.195

The colonoscopy came back with a very good/clean colon, but the rest of the GI track isn't looked at. The Dr said that "runners bleeding" is very difficult to diagnose, because damage due to ischemia is usually no longer apparent in a few days. So, we are doing some diet testing ourselves. Dr recommended that she increase fiber in the diet and make sure her hydration is up. In addition to that we have found some research that indicates being careful about using anti-inflammatory medications, such as ibuprofen or aspirin. We pushed that Dr for more info, but he just coming back with the point of view that its difficult to find the reason for this. Which is what we have found on our little research on the internet. We will talk with the Family Dr about the results that he gets towards the end of this week. We may have to go get more tests.

From Smooth on Tue, Jun 15, 2010 at 12:46:50 from 174.23.236.38

You guys are sooo smart! Often times I find that the doctors don't want to take the time to do the research. I do agreed about the careful use of NSAIDS. I am sure you guys are very good at keeping a log/journal of daily food/fluid/activity history and figure out what might trigger the bleeder. Hope you find the answers soon!

I hope 2 a days do some good. I love running with Kelly, and don't like leaving her to run alone. I'll probably start raking up a lot of miles, but that won't kill me....right?

From Smooth on Tue, Jun 15, 2010 at 12:50:05 from 174.23.236.38

No, it won't kill you! 2-a-day is excellent way to get the extra miles in. Pete Pfitzinger recommends it especially if one of the runs is done at recovery pace. I think it's perfect that you can run in the evening with Kelly! Keep it up! It benefits both of you in sooo many ways...not to mention she's awesome to run with!

Short 3 miles this morning before work.  Plan to run with Kelly tonight.

Working my way up to higher miles at a faster pace.  I think I'll be up to 5 miles next week at 8 or better.  Then this 3 miler should feel good at 7:50 or better.  I hope anyway.

Have a great day!

Will run tonight with Kelly. (yeah)

PM:  Ran with Kelly to the Legacy Center, thats 3 miles, then did 2 more miles on the indoor track, which to my surprise was cooler than outside.  Usually those indoor tracks can't keep the A/C going good enough.  Then we did some weights.  Just arms though.  Kelly had mercy on me.

PM: Kelly ran Intervals (I stuck next to her, and paced/talked her through).  6x3min at 90-95% with 2:30 rest between. These were her first serious (timed) intervals.  She did great.  Those are hard work.

Kelly and I ran our long run in Idaho Falls.  We took the family (mostly the oldest daughter) up to Rexburg to see BYU-I and her housing.  We stayed the night in Idaho Falls and took in some fireworks and swimming at the hotel.

Idaho Falls is beautiful.  Our hotel was about 4 miles from the temple and the paths that go around the Snake river right there in front of the temple.  So we ran up to the temple added some miles on the paths and ran back to the hotel.  Nice run, we were treated to a cool (< 60 deg) day.  (When you get to know Kelly a little better, you will know that anything less than 80 is COLD!)  But I loved the cool temps.

Nice run, GREAT company!

Kelly and I started off our day with a nice flat land run around our area.  Followed the run with a set of strides.  What a beautiful day.  We then took the family on a hike up the mountain.  Kelly's friend said the hike was about 1 mile and it turned out that even when we called it good (short of the destination) that my Garmin read 4+ miles.  So more than double what we thought it would be.  I ran probably .5 miles up, turned and went back to the group.  Hard running up the side of a mountain.  I don't know how those guys on this blog run the mountains.

Ran the RHPC Half Marthon.  Ran the whole thing with my sweetheart.

Going up the canyon was fun, we got to talk to a bunch of people, Smooth, Kelli, LuzyLew, Erica, (Kelli's friend, don't remember her name), Marion, Maurine, Kellie, and MichelleL.....

I have to say, I have only read Twinkies blog, and I had never met him.  But wow, he ran the first 3 + miles with his son and then turned on the heat.  He passed us like we were standing still.  Good job Twinkies!

After the turn around we came down the first two miles or so to the first (or last going up) bathroom and I had to make a stop.  I feel bad, Kelly was in a rhythm and she stopped and waited for me.  I told her to go and see if she could catch Kelli and Friend but she did exactly what I would do and waited.  That short stop got her cooled off just enough that she didn't get that "step" back.  Oh well, it was fun, we saw and got to talk to some old friends and some new ones too.  GOOD TIME!!!

I need to get some new shoes.  These Nimbus push on my third toe on the right foot and make it rub against the second toe.  Today I got home and  had bled through my sock and I could see the blood on the outside top of the shoe.  :-(  Only a little bit of pain, nothing that a band aid won't solve until I get some new shoes.

Just read through all your runs last week and this week! NICE runs with intervals, strides and rides.

I'm so sorry Kelly has a stress fracture on her toe. Hope it heals up fast.

I've bloodied my socks on the exact toes before...nut'n serious...make sure new shoes have plenty of room in the toe box though.

Please tell Kelly "HAPPY belated birthday from me!"

We need to get together for another Sat. run.

YES, we need to get together. We are taking Bailey up to BYU-I this weekend, maybe the weekend after? I think we are supposed to be 18 though, and if you run Des News you may not be up for all of that. We'll see, hopefully Kelly's foot is doing better and she can do that.

We are needing 18, maybe you can suggest a flat route. I'm worried Kelly is going to hurt her foot more. I told her last night she may have to take two weeks or more off. She didn't like that.

From Smooth on Thu, Jul 22, 2010 at 13:33:00 from 174.23.218.43

Bailey will do wonderful at BYU-I. It's always harder on the mother.

May be we can run the JRP in Lehi. I heard the trail is opened all the way to the lake.

Teena's group has been running the JRP in West Jordan, it's flat with lots a parks, not as much bugs as the Lehi JRP. I think Kelly would like that trail. If she had to cut it short, she could wait at one of the parks. They've been going at 5am to avoid the heat.

From Jon A on Thu, Jul 22, 2010 at 13:36:42 from 67.214.249.195

Maybe we should try that part of the JRP. I have never run up north of the windmills. How long of a drive to get to a good start place?

From Smooth on Thu, Jul 22, 2010 at 14:35:51 from 174.23.218.43

The place I usually accessed is on 7000 S just east of 1300 W. I take the 72nd South exit on I-15. It is about a 20-25 min drive. I can drive us there.

I will let Teena knows too. she sends out a *Chumps* email notification of their Sat. Run.

The Chumps are not doing group run this Sat b/c of Pioneer Day and some are racing DNews. so she and I are running on a different trail.

From Smooth on Fri, Jul 23, 2010 at 00:29:27 from 174.23.218.43

We are planning on 20 on the other side of the mountain.

From Smooth on Tue, Jul 27, 2010 at 13:40:41 from 174.23.218.43

Jon ~ Larry decided to take the next few days off...so we're heading to Yellowstone tomorrow (Wed) and driving home on Sat. I am bummed that I won't be able to run with Kelly this Sat. on the JRP in West Jordan. But you can still run with Teena and her group. I will tell her to PM you on their Sat. plan.

Hope you had a great trip to BYU-I. We will be passing thru there tomorrow!

From Jon A on Tue, Jul 27, 2010 at 13:46:39 from 67.214.249.195

Fun!

We may go run the JRP regardless. I don't know how far Kelly will be able to go. Her foot is still pretty sore, so flat routes will be the way to go.

Have a GREAT time in Yellowstone!

From Smooth on Thu, Jul 22, 2010 at 13:20:48 from 174.23.218.43

Thanks Ladies. You two would blaze up that much faster than I. I could go for cooler temps in the AM, especially if 75 degrees causes me to feel sick.

AM: Ran up Suncrest.  I think that will be my new measuring stick.  I'll see if I can increase pace and distance on that same route.  On the up part I was just over 8 mpm, then the down I was 7:15-7:20.  On the flat heading home I hit under 7 (6:55-6:57) for just about .5 miles.  That was nice to see on the watch. I kept the pace about 7:50 for the last mile. (except for that fast part at the very beginning of that last mile.)  Will run some with Kelly again tonight.  :)

Have a GREAT day!

PM: Tried a run with Kelly.  Her foot is worse.  I think she needs to stay off of it.  We did get 3 miles together and I think she even averaged about 8:15 per mile.  Her foot was throbbing with every step so she stopped and opted for weight lifting, while I finished 2 more miles. I finished those two miles with an average of about 7:40.  There was about a half mile at 7:15 pace.  That was good, but kinda was pooping out.

Have a great night.

Hey Smooth! Kelly's foot has two stress fractures. She is wearing a boot, and is out of running for two weeks. Then we will try a short run and see if it hurts. She is NOT happy about this.

Hope you had a great trip to Yellowstone. :-)

Hey Smooth, doing well. I've been running (blogging to FaceBook), and Kelly has been trying to keep her cardio going by ridding her bike, and doing weights. It is going to be a hard road for her to come back. I know she can make it back to finish SGM, just will be hard.

Hey Smooth, Kelly's foot is doing better, but not ready to run. She took her boot off for half the day yesterday and she is trying again today. :-

Sat I ran a couple miles up around us, then ran down 12 E and got on the JRP and headed south. Then turned around at the end and came back up to that gas station we ended at when you were with us. Kelly rode her bike and did out and backs while I tortured myself. :-)

What is your next race?

Last night Kelly and I rode part way up AF canyon.  We stopped 8 miles short of the top.  Kelly rides that like it's a speed bump on a flat road.  Such strong biking legs.  Someday I want to be able to keep up with her on a bike.  :-)

I think it's expected to feel sluggish and tired when you're at the peak of the training cycle. I feel that way when ramping up the mileage.

From Jon A on Thu, Aug 26, 2010 at 16:57:40 from 67.214.249.195

Hey Smooth,

Kelly's foot isn't doing that great. It will take longer than she would like it to. I think at this point she is consigned to maybe trying the marathon, using a run/walk method. We tried running the other night, only made it about .5 miles before pain was to much. Thats after 4 weeks of no running. I think its gonna be a while. :-(

I need to run 20-22 on Saturday. What are your plans? Kelly will probably want to ride her bike around my route while I run.

From Smooth on Thu, Aug 26, 2010 at 17:54:35 from 174.23.203.161

So sorry about Kelly's foot. Is she taping it? Give it couple more weeks. She is being veer y patient!

I think its always cool when you can run someplace that seems like a long ways away.  Started in Lehi, ran to Highland , then ran to Alpine, then ran to American Fork, then back to Lehi.  20 miles total, I know the cities are all right next to each other, but it just sounds cool to have run in and around 4 cities.

Anyway, 20 miles avg pace was 9 flat.  Legs were really hating this run.   I don't feel like I am at all ready for this marathon.  (SGM)  I'll get another 20 and probably 18 in before the marathon and hopefully feel better about doing ok at SG.

I know what you mean about running in all those cities. When people said they saw me running in Alpine (while driving in their cars) and know I live in Lehi...they were like WOW! You ran the tri-cities? It blew their minds! Wish I could have run w/ you. That would make the 20 miles go by fast.

Checking my splits, I feel ok about the run.  I'm not in as good of shape as I was last year.  One thing I have taken notice of is trying to push harder down hills/minor declines.  I'm amazed at how much energy it takes to hold a fast pace.  Saturday I had close to a mile at 5:50 or better.  And part of that mile was at 5:00 (the watch blipped a couple times at 4:58 which made me smile.)  Now I'm not fooling myself, that was a downhill stretch, but fun to see the (for me!!) really fast pace, and HARD to hold it.  It amazes me how hard it was even downhill to hold that pace.

Anyway, have a great day!

Ran the same route today as Monday.  Felt better, but not great.  Came in with a overall faster pace.  I think I may have been faster today had I not lifted weights last night with Kelly.  Did a bunch of leg training and some arms/upper body weights.  Feels good though.  :-)

Have a great day!

NICE!!! Love PR training run! :). Good work on the weights! I need to do that, may be my next training cycle...my arms are weak sauce!

"weak sauce", you crack me up Smooth. Weights are hard work for me. I have no muscle. :-)

Are you ready for SGM?

From Smooth on Thu, Sep 23, 2010 at 13:39:46 from 67.41.235.104

Hi ya Jon!!! I'm trying not to get too anxious about SGM. How about you and Kelly?

Hey, did you get Teena's Chumps email? Are you planning to run Porter Rockwell this Sat.? It'd be so fun to see you guys!

From Jon A on Thu, Sep 23, 2010 at 15:13:15 from 67.214.249.195

Hey Smooth, I saw you got caught in the rain and hail yesterday. I was running up to/from the never ending drinking fountain in Alpine, and got caught with lightening and hail and hard rain. I was very glad to get home before the huge hail came.

I haven't talked to Kelly about Sat run yet. I think it may be fun to to go run with everyone and get SGM plans.

Kelly is still out. She has gone running twice, both made her foot get painful again. She is seriously bummed about not running SG. NEXT YEAR!

I'm not feeling ready at all for SG. I hope to just cross the finish line. :-)

I'll bet you will PR!

From Smooth on Fri, Sep 24, 2010 at 18:16:45 from 67.41.235.104

Sorry to hear Kelly's not running SG! She WILL next year!

You will do great! Wish I was fast enough to see you cross the finish! I'm not getting my hopes up for a PR this year...just finish upright will be good!

Hope to see you tomorrow.

From Jon A on Fri, Sep 24, 2010 at 19:32:06 from 67.214.249.195

Hey Smooth, Kelly is SUPER bummed. She thinks she can still do it, but its been more than a month since she ran.

You'll PR, I will be VERY happy to cross the finish line. I may be crawling, but I think I will finish. :-)

It was good to see you for a second!

Race: St George Marathon (26.2 Miles) 04:00:27
Running MilesSwimming YardsBike Miles
26.200.000.00

Can I just say I don't do well in the heat.

The day started off ok, I was awake about 4:00, and wanted to sleep more.  I layed there contemplating what material make up a pillow and how they impact how well I run.  Just kidding, I was trying my hardest to lay there and get more sleep.  :-)

I was ALMOST late to the busses.  I got on the LAST bus!  Bus 333.  When I got off the bus I had enough time to throw my coat that I wasn't wearing in the bag pickup bag and throw that into the drop off truck, get to the line and 3-4 minutes later the gun went off.  No waiting in the freezing cold hudled up next to a fire for me.  Oh wait, I don't think anyone had to do that, because it was 10000 deg out there.

First few miles went as planned.  8:26, 8:25 for the first two, then 7:50-7:55 for the next few.  Got to Veyo feeling ok, worring a lot about the hill section that is ahead.  Tackled Veyo hill slower than I would have liked.  Hills have been a BIG mental problem for me this training year.  I've found myself giving up easy on hills that I used to go up without problem.

That was in reality the beging of the end.  I hear people talk about the "death march" in the final 2-3 miles, mine started about mile 17.

My plan was to take the first part easy and try and let the momentum of the hills on the second half take me to a good negative split.  About mile 17 I could tell I was NOT gonna make good on the plan.

A friend of mine found me about mile 17, he was strugling and I was strugling so we just finished together.

I think this was a good race from the point of view that I learned.  And what I learned was that I need to train better.  I have been a huge slacker in the training.  Running 4 days a week at most, weekday miles of 3-7, walk breaks = poor performance on race day.  I guess I have been learning (last year and this year) that I can't be upset with my performance on race day if I don't put the effort in with training.

I really enjoyed seeing Tyler and Kellie, Scooby, and another friend of mine Troy out on the road, Kelli and Scott in the finisher area.  I enjoyed the sprayers/mysters and the wet towels.

I finished a marathon.  One of these days I will be serious about training.  And then I'm sure I will be joining a lot of you guys in Boston!

Have a great day!

I think your race sounds a lot like the rest of ours! That heat just really did SO many of us in by mile 16-18, that the death march started early. How in the world did I miss seeing you? I was running with Kellie and Tyler from about 10 on and around Kelli and Scott at the finish at the time you would've finished. Shoot!

I'm glad you're able to see the bright side of finishing - with a friend none the less! Enjoy the nice winter season :)

Now I know why I didn't see you at the start! You took the LAST bus! You really like your pillow, don't you? jk :)

I'm so bummed I never saw you and Kelly the entire weekend.

I wish I could run your time even w/ diehard training! :) I'm glad you had a good run and experience. It's ok to not want to race...running should be fun...not a chore...sometimes training can become a chore! With that said, let's go running sometime and we'll run UP to Alpine or Suncrest if we're brave! :)

From Jon A on Wed, Oct 06, 2010 at 17:47:41 from 67.214.249.195

RAD, I don't know how we missed each other either. Tyler saw Kelly on her bike about mile 16, and ran up and talked with me for about a half mile, then Tyler and Kellie caught me by 17, I said hi to Kellie at the aid station.

Smooth, who are you trying to fool? You do run that fast. Didn't you beat me this race? Sure would have been nice to see you this weekend.

Kelly and I are in the runners series, I think we are going to run Painters and Spectrum. You in? It sure would be fun to get some training runs in. Kelly is still mending on the foot. Hope it comes around soon.

From Smooth on Fri, Oct 08, 2010 at 16:45:47 from 67.41.235.104

Jon ~ 99% of my marathons are WAY slower than 4 hr. When I try to race them closer to 4 hr I get severe charlie horse attack!!! Seriously it's a near death experience for me to run as fast as you on your leisure pace! :)

I am in the runners series. I can't do Painters b/c I will be in Texas for my daughter's 4th baby in Jan. Not sure about Spectrum. It seemed silly to go all the way to St George to run a 10K even though I've done it 3 times. I am thinking about Lake to Lake since I had so much fun running that one with Teena and 3 other girls this year! Will see.

I sure hope Kelly is healing up nicely so we can go running again. I LOVED that Sat run w/ you guys! Have a great weekend!

From Jon A on Fri, Oct 08, 2010 at 17:36:24 from 67.214.249.195

Smooth, It won't be the same running Painters and Spectrum without you around. Its gonna be a busy running season. Kelly and I are gonna try and hit a early marathon, then we are both in SGM Runners series, and both want to run SGM.

Any suggestions on earlier marathons? I would like to try and PR/BQ. (I really need to disapline myself, and run something more close to my potential) I've been thinking Ogden, maybe SLC. What do you think?

From Jon A on Fri, Oct 08, 2010 at 17:37:13 from 67.214.249.195

PS Smooth, Kelly is out looking at Christmas music for the chior right now. YEAH, christmas music is the best!

From Smooth on Fri, Oct 08, 2010 at 17:48:08 from 67.41.235.104

Jon ~ If you want to run Ogden, you better sign up ASAP. Their Half already sold out. I registered for the Full yesterday. I've never run SLC, it's a flatter course so may be not as fast as Ogden. SLC entry fee is more.

This year lots of people BQ'd at UVM which is in June. I think the course is GREAT! We lucked out this year at UVM with nice cool weather, a little rain and tail wind.

I agree that you have not reached your potential. It is tough to juggle family, work and find time to train. Winter training is a different story.

I need to look at Christmas music. I'm going to call Kelly and see what she's found! Thanks for the tips! :)

From Kelli on Fri, Oct 08, 2010 at 18:25:32 from 71.219.65.246

There is the report I have been waiting on!! That was a race of all races for sure! I am not sure I could handle being dropped off like that and then just having to GO...we had 15 minutes last year and it freaked me out!

Sorry about the heat, it really messed things up!! I do agree with what you said, get serious with that darn training and this marathon will not be a problem. You are fast, it is totally in you, I HAVE SEEN IT!!!

Enjoy some good recovery time. I hope Kellie is feeling better soon. Dang feet are a nuisance!

From Jon A on Mon, Oct 11, 2010 at 14:43:07 from 67.214.249.195

Thanks Kelli, The short time at the starting line was kinda nice. My problem was that I had convinced myself on the bus ride up that the heat was going to be nothing but trouble and I was even having anxiety about it. Mentally I have not been with it the last couple years.

Hey, how did you like Ogden Marathon? (I think you have run that) How did you/Scott do? I'm thinking of signing up today, and see if I can focus in on the training.

From Kelli on Mon, Oct 11, 2010 at 21:16:54 from 71.219.65.246

I did the same thing with the heat! And then I continued to worry about it while I ran and rank myself sick!

I did not love Ogden while I was running it, but looking back it is actually a pretty good course and very pretty. I am debating between Ogden and UVM myself right now. I better hurry, I hear Ogden will probably be full by the end of the week.

I forgot my car keys in Kelly's car, and she went to work in SLC.  So I got to ride my bike to work, saw Smooth on the way out.  14.5 miles to work average speed of 16 mph.

Got home from work and took the family to the rec center for some exercise.  Ran 4 miles.  2 slow with Zane, then 2 a little faster.  First time running since marathon.  I found it somewhat hard to hold 8 min pace.  I'll go out running Wed.

Have a great day!

HI!!!!!!!! How is Kelly's foot?

From Jon A on Mon, Nov 01, 2010 at 14:15:07 from 67.214.249.195

Hi Kelli!!!!!!! :-)

Kelly' foot isn't doing that good. Stress fractures are a major hassle to heal up. She has gone back to the boot, and a foot Dr in our ward told her last night that he would recommend that she go 6 weeks NON WEIGHT baring. Ughhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!! She is not pleased. She is on crutches, and in a boot. Hopefully she can heal and start the slow buildup to running more soon.

Your running has been awesome. Its fun to see you get better and better and better!

From Kelli on Wed, Nov 10, 2010 at 19:28:29 from 71.219.65.246

Dang it, that really stinks. It has been a bit since I asked (I was out of town). Has anything gotten better???

From Jon A on Thu, Nov 11, 2010 at 13:08:23 from 67.214.249.195

Hey Kelli, Foot is the same. Kelly is on crutches for another 4 weeks. She HATES it. Dr told her NO weight on the foot. So she has no exercise that she feels she can do. :-( I try and cheer her up, and make it as non-big deal as possible, but she really wants to do something. She is allowed to go swimming. We do that a couple times a week. She is bummed. Hopefully she can spend the better part of Dec running and working up for the Painters Half in Jan. I'm not running, I feel like it would be rubbing it in her face, so I will take the next few weeks off.

Are you and Scott running Painters?

From Kelli on Thu, Nov 11, 2010 at 13:36:58 from 71.219.65.246

UNdecided on Painters at this point. I am just kind of burnt out when it comes to racing BUT I kind of need it to keep me motivated.

That is very nice of you to NOT run. I know I get ticked when Scott goes out running and I can't. I am mad all day---you are a good husband! (Not that Scott is not, it is selfish of me to get mad, but I DO!!!)

I hope her foot gets healed quickly. I can not imagine what she has gone through the last little bit. Not exercising just kind of zaps you emotionally (at least it does me, I need that outlet!) Good thing for her she is just a naturally skinny little thing, at least she does not have to worry about that!

From Smooth on Mon, Dec 06, 2010 at 18:48:36 from 67.2.111.170

Hey Smooth, I'm so glad you guys are liking that Christmas music. Those are some great songs.

Kelly's foot is still in the boot. She has an appointment with foot Dr on Thurs. I'm guessing he is going to say its either another 2-3 weeks, or that what we thought were fractures are worse or not fractures.

From Smooth on Mon, Dec 06, 2010 at 19:41:38 from 67.2.111.170
