First run from trying to recover from calf muscle pull. I ran three miles, walked an additional two. I think I better do more stretching. It doesn't feel healed.

What was the cause of the pull?

From Jon on Wed, Apr 02, 2008 at 15:25:00

Not sure the cause. Was out on an 8 mile run 1 week post Moab half, and at about mile 6 things started to hurt. Toughed out the last bit, could hardly walk that day. The pull feels deep and in the middle.

Felt better.  Took more time up front stretching.  Walked, built up to run, slow 1 mile run, added  some speed for 2 and 3 mile, then down to walk.  Am encouraged the calf problem is getting a little better.  There was still post run pain, but very tolerable.

Felt good the whole way.  Am doing more stretching.  All the miles were slow, but I don't want to mess with that darn calf, and when the speed starts to go up I can feel the calf starting to have a little pain in there.  So, will build slow.  BUT its coming around!  Yeah.
I will add more miles/more days next week.

Welcome to the runners blog. If you want a fast marathon to qualify for Boston I would recommend either the Tucson Marathon or the Newport Oregon marathon. Good luck with your running.

From Sasha Pachev on Fri, Apr 11, 2008 at 14:29:45

There is nothing faster than St. George that I know of. But hopefully with proper training you can get fast enough to be able to qualify anywhere.

Ok, so I have a question for those more experienced runners.  When your running, and you want to pick up the pace to a faster pace, do you pick up the pace for a certain amount of time or do you go for a certain distance?  I guess my question is how do you know how fast your going if you don't know both of the questions, distance/speed.  I feel like it is a silly question, but I wonder.  Is it ok to just push it to "uncomfortable" for some period of time, then back down for the same period, then back up ......?  Just curious.

Being a slow runner I like to use breathing rate as a good indicator. For a 5 K I am breathing HARD. For a ten K I am

breathing hard but steady. For a 1/2 marathon I am breathing steady. A HR monitor will help to determine these points.

If I pick up the pace beyond my MP I will, through reacting to my breathing rate, slow down as required. Avoid lactic acid buildup and surging is never going to cause trouble.

Urrr.  5 miles felt like I went faster than my time came out.  42:25.  I had two times where I had longer than normal waits at stop lights (hit the lights just right.)  And I thought I did better because I tried picking up the pace for some short bursts.  (fast pace between telephone poles).  But I guess I went tooooooo slow on the slow parts.  Urrrrrr!  I'm going to go measure the route and make sure it is 5 miles.

No miles today, but played soccer with some guys from work. I forgot I have other muscles in my legs. Oh are they sore. Sore muscles and my cleats gave me a huge blister on my foot, all that will make for a nice running day tomorrow. Oh yeah! I'll just look at it as training for the strong mind.

Starting off was very hard. Muscles in my legs are SORE from soccer yesterday. But as usual good things are still good after you get to doing it. It always amazes me how just pushing through some lack of enthusiasm, or lack of desire, and doing those hard things makes me feel better by the time I finish. Sometimes those darn things aren't as quick to be rewarding, but running is "usually" rewarding real quick.

Took my son up the canyon on a bike ride in the evening.

I have been working up the guts to try some of these two a days that I see people on here do.  Of coarse I'm not going to have the # miles they put in.  I figure I may through one or two in this week and see how I handle it.  I just have to find a way to cut the straps that the bed uses to hold me down in the am.

Good job on getting out today, and it's amazing how much time those kids take from you. The easiest thing for me in the mornings is to make sure I have EVERYTHING ready. If I even have to look for half a second for something then it has wasted all my time and then I can't go running.

Good luck training for Boston, it's beautiful, I have been twice,(as a spectator only though)

I was only going to run 5 miles, then while was out a friend who has been talking about going out for a run called me. He has been talking about going out for awhile, I have been telling him to call me and I would go with him, so when he called I couldn't say no. So I finished up my 5, then went to my sons baseball game, then home and ran another 3 with Troy.

I'm having a hard time breaking the 8 min pace. Troy is just starting so I let him set the pace, so those three were slow slow paced. But my first 5 I had were right at 8 min per mile.

Went up Provo canyon, one of my friends wanted to run the 10k route that is coming up this weekend. Started at Mt Timpanogos Park up to Bridal Veil Falls then back. I did a couple run aheads then back to the small group.

Hamstring hurts while running, but feels better through the day.

Oh, funny thing.  Ok, not so funny for Josse, but it kinda made me chuckle.  I was running back and all of a sudden I had blurry vision on the lower half of my eye sight.  First thing that came to my mind was that darn blog I read.  "Oh no, what were they saying?  I don't remember."  "Oh no, I'm either on my death bed or I'm going to have an incredible good run."  30 seconds later: "Phew, I'm not on my death bed, its just a drop of water from the rain."  "DANG, this means I won't have an incredible run either."  Well, it was fun there for a few seconds.  Fun to remember the blog and think about all the amazing people I read about.  All from silly little drop of watter invading my eye sight.

Met my friend at the mouth of the canyon and ran up, figured the total distance was right at 8 miles.  Ran in 1:07:13.  The wind was yuck going up.  As luck would have it when we turned around to come down the canyon, we got in behind a lady from Vegas, she was hold a pace slightly faster than my friend would have let me take him, and I think he realized that he could stay with her, and went a little faster.  Had she not been there, the pace would have been about equal going back, but we got a negative split.  Yeah.

35:56 split going up.  And if I'm doing my math right, down is 31:17.

Good luck breaking out of the slump. I go through these from time to time and it seems like it's the real life stuff that causes them.

Andy, I know its real life stuff, I hope I can get some focus on things. Thanks for the encouragement!

Was a fair run.  Sure can tell that I have been lazy with getting out.  BUT, two days in a row.  I'm going to for 4 days.  So tomorrow then Sat.  Then be better next week than this week.

AM:

Was going to run up to Bridal Vail, but they had the trail blocked because of fire.

Ran into a friend at the top, ran down with him. Was an easy run, working my way back up in miles per week. This makes fourth day in a row. Yeah, will shoot for five days next week. So, this week I had a 6.75, 3.75, 3.15, and a 7 for 20.65. Next week I will shoot for 26. So, get a good start and go out MONDAY!!!!

 PM:

Wasn't planning on running anymore Sat. but the treadmil was looking lonely and I felt the urge, so I went for a 3 mile jog on the t'mill.  That sure is boring.  Took advantage of the speed knowledge and bumped up the pace to 6:30 for .25, and 7:00-7:30 a couple times for 1.5 or so.  Then sat at 8:00 for the remainder.

Hey, I know you run with Mattk every now and then, don't let him slack up now that he beat his goals!

From MichelleL on Sat, Jul 26, 2008 at 12:09:39

I already invited him to a speed workout on Tuesday. I think that might be too close to his marathon, but would be happy to have his company. We are really close in fitness so I'm glad when I can drive up and run with him.

Hey! no talking behind my back! I don't need baby sitters! Okay, maybe I do. Yeah, I definitely push it more when Michelle is around. On that note, I think I'm out for tomorrow Michelle. My right quad is still a little tender and beat. Anyway Jon, I wanted to say congrats on getting a string of runs together. I know you've had a lot of things in life/work/injuries that have been pulling away, but you're doing well. Nice distance and pace!

Went out this morning thinking I was running 5-6 miles, but then one of those stupid mis-communication things happened and I had to drive someone to the airport, so had to stop after 2.  Bummer, but luckily I have some plans to run tonight with a friend.

So, AM - 2 miles.

PM - 7 miles / 1:03

Went and ran behind the water towers above the Orem Cemitary.  The first mile just kills me.  Of coarse the last mile is fast.

Have been feeling a little pain in my right calf.

Ran from the big parking lot up South Fork, down to the mouth of the canyon.  Was trying to get Phil (not on FRB) to run faster almost the whole way.  Ended up at 1:20  From Vivian Park we had to take the highway, when we hit that little uphill section, Phil really had a hard time.  Seemed like he never recovered after that.  He is deciding if he wants to run the Half this coming Sat.  I think he would if I would run with him.  My calf was really tight to start with, and could feel it hurt when my stride lengthed and muscle had to push harder.  So I'm not sure I want to run Provo Canyon Half, opting maybe to just sit tight for Hobble Creek.  Well, if I pace Phil, and he goes slower than I would go, could be a good training run.

Thought I saw FRB singlets headed up South Fork when I was headed down about 7 am, anyone want to claim?

You should try running in heels, I hear it really strengthens those calves!

From jona on Tue, Aug 12, 2008 at 19:02:17

Ha, funny. I did hear that once, but I just can't follow Scooby on this one. He is on his own with the heel thing.

I need this calf to heal up. I am down for Hobble Creek and my miles per week are horrible right now. It will be a shame to have to do somersaults all the way down the canyon.

From Kelli on Tue, Aug 12, 2008 at 23:05:04

Your pace injured is, um, kicking my butt!

What is up with your calf?

I need to stop reading everyone's blog (and get a life) because I am starting to feel sympathy pains. My left calf is killing me and it toally cramped up while I ran today. It must have been feeling sorry for you.

And, after reading up on you, here is a question for you---what happened with your Marine Corp marathon? Is it a hard one, or did you just have a really bad day? I may need to avoid that one!

From jona on Wed, Aug 13, 2008 at 01:50:37

I don't know what is wrong with my calf. I have been having a very rough year with muscles. The pain is deep in the center. Going towards my heel. I try and stretch it and it doesn't ever seem to stretch. Last Thurs while on routine run my whole calf cramped up, to the point I walked .75 miles home. Oh well, this will pass and I'll be back on the roads and back on setting sites on BQ.

If you manage to get a life outside this blog thing, good for you, I am thankful someone other than me has a problem. "First step: Admit you have a problem."

As for Marine Corp. I didn't train very well, was having some knee problems (lack of training) and the coarse is hilly, and oh, there were 21,000 runners. There wasn't a time I couldn't reach out and touch someone. I used to want to run NYC, and Chicago, not anymore. That being said, oddly enough I kinda want to go back and do it again just so I can have a better time.

Are you running Hobble Creek?

From Kelli on Wed, Aug 13, 2008 at 12:09:15

21,000 people?? WOW, I had not idea that many people could run at one time. I hope that set the pace thingys up at the beginning to spread people out! I guess all of those big races have that many people. I will stick with UTAH.

My husband did TOU last year in 4:22, so he would like to go redeem himself as well. BUT, I made him choose---St George or TOU, not both. This year he chose St George.

My calf totally cramped up mid-run yesterday, too. (See---sympathy pains for you.) It still hurts today, but life moves on, right? I am just getting use to always having some kind of pain.

I am running Hobble Creek. I hope it is a better course than Provo was this year, I hated it!

From jona on Wed, Aug 13, 2008 at 13:07:11

Hobble Creek is better! I don't know if they have changed the coarse (doubt it) but it isn't like Provo Canyon where you weave in and out of some parking lots and around some buildings for some extra tenths. It is more of a straight shot. I ran Provo last year, and wasn't really excited to go this year. And hearing the reports I'm not sad I missed. (Other than I am not in that good of shape.)

From Kelli on Wed, Aug 13, 2008 at 13:34:23

I hate the WINDING!!! That was and is my biggest pet peeve about that race. It really messes with my head and I get so slow. Maybe I can beat my time by another 6 minutes---that would be cool (and amazing and NOT LIKELY)!!!

From jona on Wed, Aug 13, 2008 at 14:06:51

Well, I'm sure you will have a great run. I'll have to watch for you and say Hi.

Those winding things kill me every time. I would benefit greatly to preview the race before I run it. It messes with my head in a big way!!!!

Ran at the outdoor track at the fitness center again.  Ran 3 miles, took it easy.  I can tell I haven't been running much.  Calf felt better.  I stretched last night, and then stretched good before the run, then again after the run.  Now an hour and a half after I feel less pain than prior days.

Guess I'm getting old and the body is not as flexable as it used to be.  Will take more time stretching!

Went to the fitness center again.  I am finding some comfort in going there while I'm trying to get this calf muscle back in shape.  Its a mental thing I know, but I feel like I can KNOW how many miles I am at, and its somewhat flat.

Ok, a Baconator at 9PM, then bed at 12 makes for getting up by 6 is very hard.  Probably will have to change most of that schedule.

I had one of those "Awe I love that" moments. I got a late start and was running around the track and the sun was peaking over the mountains (love that too), then a few minutes pass the breeze that the sun pushes out of the canyon rushed accross the valley.  Ahhhhh, cool mountain breeze, LOVE IT.  Until it feels like wind in my face pushing me backwards!  Kidding, still love it.

Had a good run, felt ok.  Right calf is still giving me some little twinges.

1 - 7:40, thought I was going slow.  If I remember my half mile split was right at 3:50, so picked it up the last half.  The Orem City employee's were out doing some fitness something or another so a lot of runners, as I was on my last 1/4 of this mile a guy passed me, I think I let my attention go and stayed with him.  At times I like when that happens, but I also like to stay in control of myself and run my pace, I think it is helpful at the beginning of races.

2 - 7:36.  Felt good.

3 - 7:32.  I was feeling a little tired at the 2.5 split I think that was my slowest half mile split at 3:58, when I saw that I picked it up for the end.

Now, if I can just get this calf thing fixed.  Oh well.  Stretch, run, stretch.  Hopefully will be able to finish Hobble Creek.  Will try and get 7,8 in tomorrow, and get some split days in next week to increase mileage.

You have had a good week, yeah? I am sorry your calf still hurts, but it sounds like it is getting better slowly. (I am now only feeling sympathy pains for you on hills---so I figured you must be getting better.)

I still can not believe all of you people who call 7-8 minute mile paces your "nice and easy" days! AMAZING!

Wait for me at the finish line next Saturday (kidding, I am just saying you are gonna kick my butt!) I will not "chick" you, that is for dang sure. But I will watch for a guy rolling down the hill past me, which, by the way, I think would probably get you a PR.

Have a good weekend!

From jona on Fri, Aug 15, 2008 at 14:39:38

You crack me up with the "sympathy" pains.

I'm afraid it will be you watching for me to finally get to the finish line. I'm worried I will not have the endurance to make it. It would be nice to PR, but I'm not holding my breath. I would be pleased with a 1:40!

From jona on Fri, Aug 15, 2008 at 14:45:19

Oh, and one more thing, I am deathly afraid of being "chicked". I just wish I was good/fast enough that when you or others "chick" me that it would actually mean something.

Is there some way I can buy "chicked" credits? Kinda like Green House credits. So when I get "chicked" I can buy back some of the energy. I'm going to start letting the ladies with kids and full shopping carts go ahead of me at the store.

From Kelli on Fri, Aug 15, 2008 at 16:21:04

Those might not be the same ladies running, I am afraid---but it can not hurt to help us poor soles out at the store. It will definitely earn you brownie points!

I will be at least 4 minutes behind you---but maybe you need to post a picture so that I can at least say "hi" should some miracle occur and I pass you in the last mile. Or, juts run in heels, then I can spot you!

From jona on Fri, Aug 15, 2008 at 16:54:48

Well I doubt I will be setting any PR's. But my current PR for a half is right with you.

At the beginning of the season I wanted to bust that, but.....things don't always go as planned. I think next year is my year for setting PR's.

Please do say hi if you see me. I'll be wearing my white 26.2 hat, green or maroon shirt, blue shorts. I know its against most race rules, but I listen to music (on low so I can hear outside noise), I wear my arm band around my forearm.

Please do say hi when you chick me!

From Kelli on Fri, Aug 15, 2008 at 17:06:23

Uh-oh! Which races in Utah do not allow music? I can not run, literally, without it. I am a gangsta rapper (with a little country and the occasional Michael Buble).

I will look for the hat---the rest all blends in! We should all meet at the porta potties before the race----oh, wait, that is where EVERYONE meets before the race, I forgot!

From Kelli on Fri, Aug 15, 2008 at 17:13:15

OH!!! You put a picture. I did not notice with the last post! Thanks---now I will hunt you down!!

Geesh, I sound like a psycho! I better stop stalking all of the men on this Blog!! But, hey, look at that muscley dude to the right of you in the picture---I wonder if he is on this blog?!?

I only put that because my husband is currently standing over my shoulder laughing at me. He knows I am psycho!

From jona on Fri, Aug 15, 2008 at 17:37:08

That is funny. "Meet at the porta potties at dawn". You know, the one time I ran HC, I don't remember porta potties at the start line. I'm not one to use them ("germ-a-phobe"). I remember everyone running to the trees.

Yeah, the big races have rules against headphones. Here is some reading, right from Hobble Creek web site. Pg1

http://www.srcevents.com/hobblecreek/hobbleracebible.pdf

NOW, I haven't seen anyone enforce it. When I ran Marine Corp, I saw a very valid reason for not using. I was running and somehow a wheel racer came from behind, yelling on the left, I heard, a guy 20 feet up didn't. They about had a serious crash. That would stink.

Oh, and St George is USA Track & Field Certified and Sanctioned so "technically".....but I had mine on.

Serious, gangsta rap hu?

From jona on Fri, Aug 15, 2008 at 17:47:31

Yeah, the muscle dude, he is at muscledude/fastrunningblog.com. Kidding!

Tell your hello, is he running HC? I will need someone to scrape me off the ground when I get chicked. :-)

From Kelli on Fri, Aug 15, 2008 at 17:53:30

I am a germ-a-phobe myself, which is why I take the first bus and get in line as fast as I can---before they get to disgusting! I have given birth to 5 children, thus, I need potties often along the way! I do not use trees---THAT freaks me out.

Okay, we will meet at the big rock next to the smallest tree as far away from the porta potties as possible.

I HAVE heard about these rules, but I have also heard they are not enforced. So, I will just look around and see...plus, it is not like they can strip me of my medal! I do put it on low, even when not racing, unless I am running up a BIG hill---then I need it LOUD!

And, yes, gangsta CLEAN rap for me. My husband says he can actually tell when a slower song comes on because i slow down. My Ipod and me are connected, literally. Let's just see them try to rip the earphones out of my ears! So, how do I hide them? In my Mickey Mouse hat?

From Kellli on Fri, Aug 15, 2008 at 17:58:00

YES--he is running. But he beats me by 6-8 minutes. He will not wait for me when I use the bathroom---so we stay together until I have to make a pit stop and then I do not see him again until the finish. Rude, huh? All gentlemen wait when their lady is in the bathroom, don't they?

He gets chicked a lot, too. He hates it. In fact, his wife chicked him at mile 15 of the TOU and again at 18 (I made a pitsop somewhere between those miles and he passed me). He has vowed to never let that happen again. So, if you see him, push him into the ditch or something so I can not only catch him, but chick him!

From jona on Fri, Aug 15, 2008 at 18:00:45

Tuck them behind the mickey ears.

I tuck my cord under my shirt and out my sleeve and into my phone (I keep music on the phone).

I slow down on slower songs too, that probably is a good argument to run/train without.

From jona on Fri, Aug 15, 2008 at 18:07:07

Oh man, I hate getting chicked.

All gentlemen are at the finish line waiting and eager to lend a shoulder to their lady to lean on.

Kidding. :-)

Its good of you that you would allow him to run with you. I got banned once upon a time.

From Kelli on Fri, Aug 15, 2008 at 18:23:13

Um, he got banned as well. But, he came begging...

We are very different runners. He is more of a sprinter, and I am more of a long distance runner. We are fast at different times and struggle at different times. Plus, my pit stops drive him nuts. It makes running together kind of a pain!

Okay, off to cook dinner. Happy training to you next week, and I will "see" you at the finish line!

Did ok on the 5k.  21:47.  The coarse has two turn-a-rounds, the first one at just over a mile.  That is where my shoe came un-tied.  HATE that.  At the time I knew I was in 13-15 place and first girl was 1-3 behind me.  There was no way I was stopping to tie that shoe!  BUT what a distraction.  Oh well.  Made it.

I finished, held off the 1st place girl.  Came in 16th.  In my mind I am wanting to place higher in these shorter races, and in the longer ones, but I used to not care about the shorter ones, now....It would be nice to win my age group. (today, 4th in age)

From jona on Tue, Aug 19, 2008 at 16:23:13

Kelli, Oh, the faster times are coming down the canyon. 4 miles up, then 4 miles down. I have faster in me for the up part, I just haven't trained well enough to actually perform to that standard. (ok, faster like I think I could average in the mid 7's) I have my goal time for 1:40 Sat. I'm concerned that I will poop out. I'm deciding on how to approach the race, Easy easy for the first 3 or so, then gradually build or easy for more. The underlying goal is to finish. Lack of training will make getting a desired time difficult.

That is what I want to see by May next year, mid 7's on a 8-10 mile run.

Sunnyrun, Thanks for the encouragement!:-)

2 - 7:58  Some guy passed me pretty fast, at about mile 1.75, he stopped, then passed me again at the same spot about 2.25, then again at 2.75, I'm figuring that he is using me, let me get out there to a certian point then bust a gut to catch me before his rest spot, figure he is doing .5 mile repeats.

3 - 8:06  Rounding first corner after my mile 3, look back accross the field to check on the guy making me feel like I need to do more fast repeats, thinking about speeding up so he has to work really hard to get me.  HE IS CUTTING THE FIELD IN HALF.  Cutting the corner, what kinda deal is that.  Now I think I was just feeling bad that I took the day off yesterday, and was taking it easy today.  He probably wasn't doing anything with regards to me.  Silly me.  But it was fun thinking about making him work hard.

4 - 8:03

5 - 8:07  I wasn't going to run this one, I stoped after 4 and stretched, and while I was strectching I thought I would try a "cool down" mile.  As I started back up I ran about 100 yards or so and as I breathed in my gum went shooting down my throat, but only it didn't go down.  COUGH, COUGH, COUGH and out it shoots.  Dang gum.

Careful! Note to self: Dont inhale! lol Your morning sounds amazing!! You got a good workout, had a great laugh, and preformed the heimlich on yourself, all while maintaining an 8:04 pace. Way to go!

From jona on Thu, Aug 21, 2008 at 12:43:09

Didn't think about that, funny, "Heimlich". That whole thing will teach me, I was relaxed and being casual about that last mile. When I'm being more serious, I take care of things, like gum in my mouth, but when I am just being easy going, I can't walk and chew gum at the same time let alone run and chew.

From Kelli on Thu, Aug 21, 2008 at 12:57:23

That'll teach you to go the extra mile!

I still can not believe what you call EASY miles. You are high on something---speedy demon fumes or something!

Glad you had some guilt over the day off, though! No more days off!

From Kelli on Fri, Aug 22, 2008 at 11:36:48

HEY----my neighbor did not get my shirt finished and had some kind of emergency today with her son. SO, no shirt for me for the race! DANG IT! Next time. I guess you will just have to watch for the "woman in black" should she happen to pass you!!

Good luck tomorrow, here is to a PR, I CAN FEEL IT FOR YOU!

LOL! Kelli: "Glad you had some guilt over the day off, though! No more days off!"

I took today off. The bed got the better of me. I guess that is a good thing about this blog, now I feel guilty.

From Kelli on Fri, Aug 22, 2008 at 12:34:51

Well, I have been running up and down the 2 sets of stairs while I clean, blog, clean, blog, clean, blog. That should count for something! And, now I am off to mop and vacuum---that is cardio!

Actually, we just decided that since the weather is so nice, we may go run this afternoon! You watch my blog---it may happen!

From jona on Fri, Aug 22, 2008 at 12:48:04

I'm not going to be out done. I will get a run in sometime today!!!!

Run to the corner store for a drink, run to get lunch, run to pickup my race packet. LOTS of running!

From Kelli on Fri, Aug 22, 2008 at 13:42:19

I did both sets of stairs 22 times. I counted. I still have to vacuum, but I have also mopped! BEAT THAT! And, i am still in my running clothes, so ya never know (although I will puke honey nut cheerios if I try any time in the next few hours).

Now, running, in my car, to get my bib.

From Sunnyrun on Fri, Aug 22, 2008 at 18:24:56

I think we should be able to count all the additional "running" we do. And hey Kelli, I'll help you add miles to your blog by having you clean my house too. lol Its in bad shape and you sound like a wonder women. Have fun tomorrow :)

Well, I had set my goal for 1:40, missed it.  I'm disappointed/aggravated.  I'm very impressed with how my friends did, Scooby, Kelli/Scott, Matt/Lesslie, and Bill.

1 9:06 I couldn't believe the split here.  Dang crowd.  Proved to be ok though, probably would have gone to fast if I would have had clearer road.

2 7:11 Was disappointed with the first mile, picked it up, stopped talking.

3 7:19 Liking the splits, feel good, but I knew that the lack of distance training was going to haunt me somewhere after nine.

4 6:55

5 7:17

6 7:24

7 8:08 Missed the marker, but realized it shortly after and hit my lap anyway, so this is a little long, and made the next one (two) faster than they really were.

8,9 14:39  I missed the mile marker somehow, so this is a two mile split. (7:35 avg for 7,8,9)

10 7:57  GOT CHICKED!  Good job Kelli!  Started really loosing my legs here.

11 8:04  Really feeling that hill now.  Poor training coming into play in a big way.  Was trying to keep my eyes on where Kelli is at, but am loosing it too fast.

12 8:31

13 8:33  Resisted the urge to walk in a huge huge way.

13.1 00:44

If I can get over being CHICKED, I will try and smile about getting a PR.  I look forward to a better training year next year.

Congratulations to all!

You can get over it! You PR'd!!

That hill was rough, I do not like hills. I could have really enjoyed just a 13.1 mile downhill run!

Even though our first mile stunk---we got to chat so it was worth it! Next year we will pretend we are elite and start in front of everyone else!

GOOD JOB and GREAT to finally meet you!

It was good to meet you and Scott! I enjoyed chatting with you.

Oh, I forgot to add, one thing I like about race day, I had a soda, and I am going to eat BIG. Then back to normal Monday.

Ummmmm!

PS, I am watching Olympic Hula Hoop dancing. ???

From Kelli on Sat, Aug 23, 2008 at 16:30:09

Are you kidding? Trampoline, speedwalking, now hula hooping?? Really? I wish i could commandeer the remote from my kids, but that is not gonna happen.

I eat big the day before---and I pay for it on the scale. I weighed 4 pounds more today than yesterday. That stinks! We went to Taco Bell on the way home, and I even got the healthy soft taco (140 calories).

To be a man with a high metabolism.

Nice rest day, late this evening I rode my bike over to see the kids, 2 miles one way, 4 miles round trip, 16.5 minutes round trip time.

Thighs are a little sore.  Right achilles is aching.  I felt my arch and achilles durring the race yesterday, I think I have been pushing the life span on those shoes.  I think I will replace them.  There is probably more than 500 miles on them.

Yeah, easy. Did you see the men's marathon winners the other day, I think they went faster than I was going on the bike. Yikes.

From Kelli on Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 22:58:12

I did watch the marathon---the entire thing!! My husband would not fast forward for fear that he would miss Ryan Hall making his move. Too bad that never happened.

The haul fanny (I think I am not supposed to say butt on here). I know they go faster than I bike. It is seriously scary to me that they can run that fast for that long.

Hey, did you save the lovely e-mail I sent you last week (the running dude with the issue??) I deleted it (I delete everything, kind of a neat freak). Anyway, Walter would like it resent to him so he can show everyone!

From jona on Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 23:06:59

Kelli, I sent that picture to you.

By the way, I had you down placing like 67th in the woman category. You should go get your medal! You deserve it.

From Kelli on Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 23:10:20

What, I get a medal???

They gave the first 100 women a necklace as we crossed the finish line---so I think I got it already.

Now, I tried to go through and count and I thought I was more like in the 40's somewhere. Way to make my day!!!!

Thanks for the picture (can I just say GROSS one more time??) I sent it to Walter.

From jona on Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 23:15:35

Kelli, I know they were giving the first 100 men/women something I thought it was a medal, but maybe it was a necklace for women. I know when my chicked self came through they were giving medals to women, but the men had already been given. It was probably a necklace. You could email runners corner and ask.

I checked, you were the 67th woman. You rock!

From Kelli on Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 23:20:05

I guess 67 is better than 167. I would prefer 1st, but I'll take what I can get.

Okay, I have the paper write here. The first 100 women got an elite 100 necklace as they crossed the finish line. So I have it. I should start wearing it every day. Oh, and they called me ELITE. Can I change my status officially??? I am an ELITE runner, or at least I was for a day.

From jona on Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 23:35:10

Yes, I think you should change your status to ELITE!

From Kelli on Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 23:41:05

From scooby on Tue, Aug 26, 2008 at 12:58:49

ELITE!?! You bet.....take it and run with it girl!!! And YES, 67 IS better than 167. You are a STUDETTE!! I looked at my time and I would've gotten 89th out of the men, so, that medal sure would've looked good up in my cubicle here!! (and you can bet I would've changed my status to Elite....at least for a day!) Oh well, maybe next year!! Maybe I can get a medal at the St. George.

When I got home I went to the gym and got 5 miles running in on the tread.  Not a bad pace, but the temp in there was horrible.  I thought about half way through I should have just gone outside.

Now I am going to sit down to eat a couple of Good German Brats, then I think I will go to the corner store and get a soda.  Living large!

A very speedy 3 miles, I might add. Nothing like sleeping in to get you to run FAST!

From jona on Thu, Aug 28, 2008 at 15:57:18

I don't feel like they are fast, I see the time and think "Good job," but then I think, "yeah, but you can't keep that up for more than a few miles." I need to get the longer runs going.

From Kelli on Thu, Aug 28, 2008 at 16:07:14

Drive out here every morning, they will make you RUN long, slow miles!

It is easier to bear through it with a group. You need to find some running friends---where is Scooby when you need him?

From jona on Thu, Aug 28, 2008 at 16:12:41

I've never been a social runner. But I think I may need to change that. Maybe.

From Kelli on Thu, Aug 28, 2008 at 16:15:40

We are bloggin' back and forth here and all over the place.

But, ya know what? I said the same thing. My husband and I ran together, but not together, ya know. I just liked to be by myself with my music. This group has changed everything. It feels more like a race, but in a good way. There are so many of us and we are all stretched out when we run, but it keeps me moving. I do talk to people, and I have found that I really like it (I am sure I drive them nuts, but oh well). It has been a nice change.

From jona on Thu, Aug 28, 2008 at 19:59:58

I used to run with my (then) wife. She banned me, I have gotten used to running alone. I don't mind running with others, haven't found anyone local with the same hours. Scooby is willing, but has to stay pretty fluid in when he goes. I'll find someone. I may join back up with the FRB competitor Sojourner, they have a group that runs 2-3 times a week. (Actually, they are putting together a really good run this weekend)

Better yet, I just need to get my mind back in the game and go!

From Kelli on Sat, Aug 30, 2008 at 14:24:55

You were putting messages out there, so I came to visit to see what you did today. Hmm...nothing here for two days now. Do I need to come and drag you out to run? If I have to suffer (literally) through 18.1 miles, you need to at least get in those 10/11/12 feet you promised!

From jona on Sat, Aug 30, 2008 at 14:59:02

I'm out there. Ok, so I took a couple days off. I'm sure I'm paying for it. Next week will be better!

Thanks for keeping me honest!

From Kelli on Sat, Aug 30, 2008 at 15:14:42

It has absolutely nothing to do with keeping you honest. I just think that if am going to run, everyone should have to. I am in pain right now, and dang it, you better be to!

From jona on Sat, Aug 30, 2008 at 15:29:39

From jona on Sun, Aug 31, 2008 at 15:19:18

From jona on Sun, Aug 31, 2008 at 15:41:40

Good one!

That little fact can be left out of future discussions! :-)

From Kelli on Sun, Aug 31, 2008 at 15:49:09

Well, you know, I have youth on my side so I have to use it!

Now, in reality, you may just be a hair older than me (since your son is a senior and mine is a sophomore). Or, is he not your oldest and you are like a grandpa or something? If that is the case, you do not look your age, old man!

From jona on Sun, Aug 31, 2008 at 16:02:14

Funny, I hope I don't look my age anyway.

If I'm a grandpa, I may have to give up running and take up a cane. I don't want that title (yet). How scary! I'm not old enough or mature enough to be a grandpa.

From Kelli on Sun, Aug 31, 2008 at 16:04:17

That is okay, cause I am not old enough or mature enough to be a mom of a teenager. I do not know what I am doing! But, do you ever?

My MIL was a grandma at 36!! So, you never know.

From jona on Sun, Aug 31, 2008 at 16:11:10

I'm not mature enough to be a dad either. But I don't have that choice anymore. I guess now I don't have the grandpa choice either. I just hope I did enough proper training that grandpa title comes along at a good time.

I got a late start, hit the trail head about 7:15.  Ran up Provo Canyon, had a faster than normal pace going up.  I knew I had limited time.  I had to get home and get my son ready for football.  I wanted to get 8 in before I had to take him to his game, so I pushed the pace going up, and was hoping that I could equal that going back down.  The wind sucked going up!  Wow.  I hate when you feel like your loosing ground.

Finished my 8 just in time to get Brady to his football game, then took of from the parking lot for 4 more miles.  That was tough.  There was about 30-40 minutes between runs, and I did push the pace up and down the canyon, my knees felt like they were pounded on.  The route for the 4 mile was basically the coarse (NOT flat) that is used for the Turkey Tri in Nov with enough added on to make it 4.

So, the breakdown:

.5 : 4:03

.5 - 1.5 : 7:41

1.5 - 4 : 19:40 (7:52 pace)

4 - 6.5 : 17:22 (6:57 pace)

6.5 - 7.5 : 7:18

7.5 - 8 : 3:50

59:54/7:29 pace

Next run

4/32:00 8 min pace (was tired and it showed. Like last week)

Way to go! Got your run in and your son to football!! 7:29 is FAST!

From Kelli on Sun, Aug 31, 2008 at 15:30:20

How did I ever beat you?

Good job, sorry about the knees. Mine hurt while i run and then for a few hours after, but then it goes away pretty much. Does your pain stay or is it just while running?

See you tomorrow. I will not be chicking you---I am just barely warming up at 6 miles. And that is a true story. This is why I have never run a short distance race---I just do not "feel it" until much later!

From jona on Sun, Aug 31, 2008 at 15:39:48

You beat me because I am not in a distance type shape. I need to get more long runs in. My week day runs are 3-5 miles and my "long" runs on weekends have only been 7-9 miles. I'm going to change that. Hobble creek was my first "longer" run, I will get 13,14 this next Sat.

The pain was just at the end of the first run yesterday and a little for a couple hours after. I think that it is temporary. The longer runs I will start to get in will condition those joints.

I'm sure your just "sandbagging" me on the short race thing.

From Kelli on Sun, Aug 31, 2008 at 15:47:26

I am not, I promise! I think the fastest I have ever done 6 miles is like 51 minutes. And, you have to add another .2 to that. And, I have no pressure on this one. I have never done a 10k before, so no matter how I do it will be a PR for me!

I hope all is well with the knee for the rest of your running week. I think distance running is overrated! It hurts and it takes up so much of my busy day. I am looking forward to the weekend of October 10th---when I no longer have to do any kind of long run!

From jona on Sun, Aug 31, 2008 at 15:57:08

Ah, long runs, a necessary evil.

Do you know anything about this 10k? Hills, flat....?

From Kelli on Sun, Aug 31, 2008 at 16:02:42

I don't. I think she said it was pretty flat. I am just hoping to not get lost on the route. It worries me when a race is so small that I will not have enough people to follow.

From jona on Sun, Aug 31, 2008 at 16:05:04

I'm sure there will be plenty of people to follow. I'm lucky, because I will get to follow the speedsters, Michelle, Scott, you....

Fun race, I started out to fast, and then faded on the last two miles.  Kelli just about "chicked" me again on the last 2 miles.  She will say I held her off, but I know she was just being kind. (either way, thanks for being nice, and thanks for pushing me)  I really feel the fact that I haven't been putting in longer mile days.  I need to get up to 5-6 per day during the week and build the strength and endurance on the weekend "long" runs.  Still fun, enjoyed the race, and for me this is a first on a 10k and first time I have ever placed in my age group.  All the old guys are wheelchair bound now, so I finally placed.  Yeah!!!!

After the race, everyone met over at Marion's for pancakes.  Yummy!  Enjoyed hearing how everyone did.  I'm getting more and more convinced this blog thing is good for me.  At least it gets me out of my shell a little.

Don't really know my splits, I thought I hit my lap button on mile one, but must have missed it.  So, the first two are together.

14:11  Pretty sure the first one was 6:40 or so.  That is what these guys said when we passed mile 1.

8:05  This is 1.2 miles, Kelli and Scott were pushing me, Scott took off, I tried for about two steps to stay with him, but no chance.

I said it in my blog for the record, but I will say it again---I could not have beat you if I had tried. Oh, wait, I am not really that nice, I DID TRY, but I couldn't do it in the end. You won fair and square.

So, did you get out of there quick? We needed gas and there is only one gas station where Scott can get gas there. And, you guessed it, it was back on the other side of the parade route! We did not get home until 12:30! Guess we shoulda gone on that 4 mile run after all.

Great job, once again!

Great miles- great pace!

Thanks Marion. I have to tell you, I'm still thinking about that yummy breakfast. What a treat that was, thank you!!!

From marion on Wed, Sep 03, 2008 at 12:10:36

You are EVER so welcome! We are SO glad you came! I was noticing, I think you and I are the tallest runners on the blog. I am for sure taller than the girls, and many of the guys :)

From jona on Wed, Sep 03, 2008 at 12:21:27

I think Scooby may be taller than I. Not sure. Now if that extra height did me any good!

From Kelli on Wed, Sep 03, 2008 at 15:38:49

It is all in the length of the legs.

Good job today, way to run a hill (and a speedy one at that!)

From jona on Wed, Sep 03, 2008 at 16:06:42

Kelli, I just kept think you were behind me, I could hear Scott saying come on he is right there. Dang hills.

Ran pretty much the same route as yesterday, added on.  I think it was more than 6, but not to 6.5 so I'll count 6.  I want one of those dang GPS watches.  I've decided I really like knowing how many miles I run.  Not knowing plays with my head.

Yesterday 12:14 to the bottom of the hill.  Today 12:13

Yesterday 4:02 up the .5 mile hill.  Today 4:09.

I lifted weights (legs only) yesterday, and I am feeling it today!!!!!!!!

Have a GREAT day!

Hey- Great run! The garmins are WONDERFUL!!! There is one on this blog that was the same price as the one I got on Amazon and nicer. I have the Forerunner 201. I LOVE it, cause I can just head off in any direction and know who far and how fast. I love that it does the splits for me automatically. It was well worth the money :)

Hvae a great day!!!

From jona on Thu, Sep 04, 2008 at 11:55:26

Hey Marion, I don't know about that being a great run. My skinny little legs felt like 10,000 lbs, EACH.

I'm saving my pennies for one of those fancy watches. Someday! When I get it, I am going to just go, and turn on streets that I have no idea where they go, I'm going to go to a different city and just start running. And my mind won't have to think about "oh am I on 4.5 or 4, have I run 6 or 6.25". Oh well. At least I'm running a little more than what I was a month ago.

You have a great day too!

From Kelli on Thu, Sep 04, 2008 at 14:48:52

They are worth the pennies you will have to save! We bought ours because we run on paths and we would have no clue how far we had gone! But, as you well know, we share one. They are PRICEY!

Great job on the run. I think if you worked your legs yesterday and you only slowed down a hair on the hill you are doing great! A half mile hill is no joke.

From jona on Thu, Sep 04, 2008 at 16:41:22

Kelli, I have wanted one for a couple years, this year I don't have all my old running routes that start at the front door, so I am having to find others, the watch would come in nice right now. My stupid "wine taste on a beer budget" is slowing my purchase, but it will come.

The hill runs are a must, that has become painfully clear lately. I have had one chicking and a very very very near chicking. I'm blaming it on the lack of power on hills. But I also know that the chick that keeps doing this is fast, and I should keep my head up because she is so dang fast and strong that she beats lots of guys. :-) (Your awesome Kelli!)

From marion on Thu, Sep 04, 2008 at 16:50:48

you are TOO funny! I chicked 33 guys at the 5k on monday! I should say, I BEAT 33 guys! :) None of them were nearly as fast as you Jon ;) Plus I would NEVER chick you Jon, firstly, because I couldn't, and secondly out of respect for the male runner. Women should NEVER pass a man as to not damage their fagile sense of self! LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL!!! I am cracking up all over my living room floor! :D Watch out Jon... I am coming for you!!!!

From Michelle N. on Thu, Sep 04, 2008 at 16:53:51

Jon-You could look on ebay and see if you could find one on there. Although, I don't know why anyone would want to get rid of theirs. I have a brother that has wine taste on a wine budget so I tend to get all of his hand-me-downs. His old Garmin was only 6 months old and he bought a new one. Lucky me.

From jona on Thu, Sep 04, 2008 at 17:36:15

Marion, Ha ha ha! :-) I'm so going to start my races behind you and Kelli and just STAY there! You all are way to strong and fast for this old man.

Michelle, Your so lucky! I keep asking all my relatives, and haven't found one that even runs let alone have a GPS. Although, one sister offered that she would drive behind me in the car if I would pay the gas. lol!

From Michelle N. on Thu, Sep 04, 2008 at 18:42:34

Well, if she'd follow you could call her a GPS (Great Pacing Sister)Ha, ha. I crack myself up. One time my oldest was being really ornery and I told her to quit with the PMS and my 6 year old said "What's PMS"? I replied with Pretty Mean Sister. So that is what PMS is at our house now.

From jona on Thu, Sep 04, 2008 at 19:09:07

Those are funny acronyms. My second son is kinda big for his age (16 yrs old, 6'4" 190 lbs) we call him BFG (Big Friendly Giant). If its ok, I'm going to use PMS on my daughter when she pipes up just the right way.

From marion on Thu, Sep 04, 2008 at 19:32:37

We refer to the babies as having BMS- Baby Monster Syndrome!

From Kelli on Fri, Sep 05, 2008 at 13:33:42

Oh, Jon, You are so nice to me. I am not that fast---I just have endurance. Remember how long it takes me to catch you!

We will give you our hand me downs when we get rich!! Oh, wait, I married a cop. That is not gonna happen.

Did you know there is a book called The BFG?

From sunnyrun on Fri, Sep 05, 2008 at 13:57:39

I love the acronyms!! When my boys are acting too big for their briches I start into the acronyms with a valley girl drawl, it shuts'em up quick. Too bad my running cant be as quick as my wit!!

Keep hitting the hills Jona, and know this is one chick that wont ever chick your 8 min miles.

From jona on Fri, Sep 05, 2008 at 14:50:04

sunnyrun - Never say Never! You have it in you. I may act like it hurts my pride, but I am happy for anyone that can pass me! Keep up your hard work and you will smile when you chick me!

Kelli, That is cool about that book, I wasn't thinking we were original, I thought the younger kids just modified BFF, but now that you say that I think I remember someone saying something about a book. Is it about Big Friendly Giant?

You are fast, you keep saying that it took you a long time to catch me, but it didn't, you had me in your sights the whole time on the 10k. Your faster than you give yourself credit for!

From Kelli on Fri, Sep 05, 2008 at 20:35:32

Scott had you in his sights (he was trying to motivate me), but I could not see you until you were right there! I was focusing on just not puking pretty much the whole time. See, you just ran. I ran so hard I was going to be sick! That is not good!

The book is like an easy chapter book written by Roald Dahl (the author of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory). We read it every year when I was a teacher. And, yes, it stands for the big, friendly giant. You should buy him the book (I know he is older, but everyone loves Roald Dahl).

From jona on Sat, Sep 06, 2008 at 00:23:42

Kelli, Your a really good runner, your fast and have great endurance.

Maybe we should make a new rule, if a guy gets chicked he has to run backwards for a little bit. I would be running backwards all dang race!

I was going to go in the morning, then my son informed me that I had to take he and his buddy to their football game in the morning.  Well they had to be there by 7:30, that meant I had to be back home by 7, which meant hitting the trail by 5, out of bed by 4:30.  YUCK!  So I slept.  Thinking I could get started after the football game.  NOT.

So, I finally got out about 5 PM.  I ran up Provo Canyon,  Went passed Vivan on South Fork and up to South Fork Canyon Park.  I think that is about (almost) half way to the parking lot. ( I think that is Spring Hallow) then went back down.  The up really wiped me out.  I need to get the legs stronger.  The gym will be seeing me!!!

I did get a mile in on the track by my sons football game before it started, then 15 in the eve.

2:10/8:41 pace.

I had two somewhat lengthy stoped or walking spots, my son called me and need Dad to be able to talk more than breath heavy, so I walked while I was talking to him for about 2:30, and then another when I stoped to take some GU, and water.  So I think my pace was slightly better than how it turned out, but who knows, maybe I would have been more tired and not been as fast.

Great job JON! I can not believe you ran in that heat. YUCK, but a necessary evil when we have kids to cart all over! I bet your speed would have been even faster had it not been so hot.

Walking is rejuvenating, it helps more than it hurts---at least I think so!

From jona on Mon, Sep 08, 2008 at 14:10:10

Thanks Kelli. It was hot. I had the throw up feeling at the very end. About 1.5 miles from my turn around point I saw two lady's going down the hill they didn't look like they had run up the hill, so I thought, "there is my rabbit, catch them if I can!" So me going up, them going down, I caught them at the dang very end of my route. :-)

NEW.  That is the theme for the day.  I had been saving my pennies and saving and saving.  Well.  I totally spoiled myself last night.  I needed a pair of shoes, those were in the budget, but then I realized I had enough saved to get the watch I have had my eye on.  I got the Garmin 405.

So, this morning I got up, it took me 20 min or so to get it to work, put on/tied on my NEW shoes, straped on my NEW watch, and out the door I went.  4.08 miles, and I didn't have the turning points mapped out.  YAHOOOOOOOOO.  Its a little distracting.  I mean I'm trying to run, but looking at the stupid VP (don't go there, Virtual PARTNER), look at the pace, distance, heart rate, wondering if I have the settings right.  Then every now and then I catch sight of the newness of the shoes, wow white.  Why can't they make at least black in all the shoes?

Anyway, I have a lot of data now.  Love the watch.

32:15/7:53 pace (I won't bore you all with all the data, but wow is there data.)

Ok, day two with the fancy GPS thing.  And it occurred to me that Kelli could be right.  I am dang fast. I set the virtual partner to run at 10 min per mile pace and I smoked him.  I am so fast compared to that guy.  He was even talking smack.

Mile 3 had that dang 1/2 mile uphill section in it.  That is short for you in shape people out there, but man that knocks me down every time.  I had good pace going up, over all on that mile was my fastest (7:36) I also hit 175 on the heart monitor.  That is something I'm glad to get back with.  I used to use a HM with my Polar watch, but that didn't have a good lap feature so I stopped using it.  I think I can push myself harder.  I think I was a little low on this run.  I should probably be hitting 180, 185.

I won't bombard you with this data all the time, I'm just experimenting with what I like to report, how it looks.

From Kelli on Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 13:54:18

I am ALWAYS right! So, what does the virtual partner do? Yell at you to go faster.

You can bore me with the details. I want to know if we should stick with the kind we have, or get the new one. I was leaning towards the 405 because it is smaller (the other one hurts me to wear) but I have heard a lot of people say it is way too complicated. Then again, you are a computer guy, so it may be easy for you and way too much for me!

Great run. You really are fast Jon. Now with your toy as a trainer, I will never be able to chick you again! DANG!

From jona on Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 16:15:01

Kelli - I haven't played much with the settings for the virtual partner, but the basic stuff just displays distance and time ahead or behind. Its easy to see quickly if you are behind, the display is black background and clear #'s/letters. You can use the VP to race against your past performances.

I don't think it is complicated at all. I have even thought about it from a none computer guys point of view. It certainly can be more complicated, but most people find the things they like/use and stick with those things.

I'm having a small hiccup with the transfer/upload feature, I suppose I will figure that out soon though. Once I have most of it discovered I will be more than happy to help others.

I'm pleased so far with the satellite abilities. I was worried that there would be areas where the watch/satellite wouldn't work, so far so good. I will run up the canyon Sat, that is where I think there could be a problem.

There is plenty of data! The web tools are cool, maps, graphs, reports......

From Kelli on Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 18:02:40

I like that it will tell you how far ahead or behind you are---that could come in handy for a race!

I have issues every once in a while with the GPS going out for a minute, but not long. It worked for most of TOU, and most of the two Provo 1/2's. I think I lost a little bit during Hobblecreek, too, but not enough to affect anything.

From jona on Fri, Sep 12, 2008 at 00:57:31

That is what I don't want. I hope it stays in contact with the satellites. I'll keep you posted on this. I think I will like the virtual partner. Just on normal runs you can tell it that you want to go say 9 min pace and it will show you if your ahead or behind. I will use that on my long runs for sure!!!! I have a hard time staying slow. On the flip side I could set it to be 7:30 pace and push harder to stay with the VP.

From Kelli on Fri, Sep 12, 2008 at 11:28:15

Come and run with me, I will keep you nice and slow in the beginning!

From jona on Fri, Sep 12, 2008 at 13:27:43

Kelli, yeah, then you will dust me at the end of the run.

This just about killed me.  I really struggled getting this run done.  Had some serious hard times.  I was telling the guy I was running with that I had some serious mind problems with going up the section from Vivan Park up South Fork to the parking lot about 3 miles up.  Just as we started up the first hill a big gust of tail wind came, and I chuckled and told Bill that it must be God telling me that I can do it.

I fell apart here and there, really struggled.  Very hard 18 miles.  The kind of hard that makes me question why I think I could go another 8.2.

From jona on Sun, Sep 14, 2008 at 12:45:26

Marion, Thanks for the boost of confidence. I kept telling myself that I had to finish, get the miles, its the mental challenge. In hind sight I can see I conquered. But I still have this doubt back there. Next Saturday will test me again. Funny about those splits. Its easy to see others work for what it is/was, the only thing I see is 11:32 and 10:38, and some 9:30+'s.

Thanks again for the confidence!!!

From marion on Sun, Sep 14, 2008 at 13:01:57

You know- the splits are good to have, but they can really mess with your mind. I love my gamin, BUT most of our training needs to be at a VERY conversational pace, reguardless of the "real" pace. Did you realize that TEN of those miles were in the 8's? Four of the 9's were less than 9:30. Did you run up and then down the canyon, or just up?

From jona` on Sun, Sep 14, 2008 at 13:55:03

I ran up, started at the mouth and went up. Then turned around and came back down.

I think some of the reason I felt so yucky is the time of day. We started about 1:30.

I hear what your saying, I'm thankful that you are keeping me in check with my bad attitude. :-) I need to concentrate more on the positives.

From marion on Sun, Sep 14, 2008 at 14:43:41

I need to work on going out easier. I need to control myself. What am I thinking. :-)

Funny, I used to have a "wiener dog" by the name of Louise. She was fun. She chased those laser pointer dots like crazy. Very fun to watch.

From marion on Sun, Sep 14, 2008 at 15:25:25

Dogs are AWESOME!! We've always had golden retrievers. Cal, the dog, had to move out due to Mac's (my 4 year old), nigh unto death allergies. It was SO sad. Ford, my 7 year old, voted we get rid of Mac and keep Cal. We revoked his voting privileges at that point. Boy was that tough.

And, I think you SHOULD smoke it up mountain. That is REAL power! Way to be a billy goat. Did you even know you were part goat?

From jona on Sun, Sep 14, 2008 at 15:30:04

I had no idea I had any goat in me. That doesn't explain why I like steak and potatoes so much. I thought goats ate that green stuff.

That is sad when you have to re-home a dog.

From Kelli on Sun, Sep 14, 2008 at 17:32:23

Wow, great job Jon!! You are laways saying that Scott and I are fast, so now is the time to eat crow. Your avg pace is faster than ours was on our 18 and 20 miles runs AND you did way more uphill than we did. You rock and you do not even know it!! A long training run is supposed to be SLOWER---and that is right about where yours should be based on your 1/2 and 10k times (since they are similar to mine!) You need to be more POSITIVE!!!

Okay, now we have to get you a spot in St George. I am going to have Scott check on that at work tomorrow.

Did you take any Gu (or something like that)? I never did last year and I can see a HUGE difference this year. It really helps. Speaking of GU---they should ban it as it is far more of an aide than a stupid iPod is!!!

Have a great restful day!!! AND YOU ARE AWESOME!!!!

From jona on Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 00:35:54

Kelli and Marion, you two are just too nice.

Kelli, energy was a problem for me Sat. I wasn't sure when I would get out, I missed breakfast, and then as I got close to when I was thinking we would go I didn't want to get a lot of food, so I didn't eat. About 1/2 hour before I ate one of those snickers protein bar, and some beef jerky. I took two GU's with me, had one about mile 7, then the other at mile 15. Energy was seriously depleted. I'll make sure I'm better off this next week.

I'm totally with you on the iPod thing. I think it is stupid they consider iPod's an aid. They should outlaw watches too. I think they aid more than music. I mean where would the top runners that we know be without their watch to tell them splits? Ok, I'll let it go, not much I can do about it.

K & M, thank you for all your encouragement. I really appreciate your help on this mental friend!

Way to cross train! Are you loving your GPS!

From jona on Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 12:59:54

I do love my GPS. I find that I am wanting to do weird things like "What is my max heart rate?" "I should go run as fast as I can and see if I can make my heart jump out of my chest and see what the meter reads."

The heart rate monitor is cool, as I'm sitting here getting hunger signals and pains I wonder if someone could come up with a way to monitor hunger. Because I think that I'm about 100% hungry right now.

Are we like cars, can we measure how much we put in and get some sort of Miles Per Pound/Calorie reading? That would be a cool measurement. "I'm rated at 18 MPP"

You need to go to bed earlier then you can get up at the crack of dawn.

Night run again.  Ran a route that I knew would give me a good hill.  Hit the hill during the 3rd mile.  Tried to pick up the pace here and there during each mile, not sure it did anything for me, but I did it.  I think when I get serious about this running thing I will try that speed work stuff like run .25 miles 20 times as fast I can with rest in between.

Nice run my friend!! Have a great day!!!

From Kelli on Wed, Sep 17, 2008 at 14:46:56

Are you not serious??? I thought you were.

Great job on the hill JON! Seriously, HOW did I ever chick you? I have a feeling it will not ever happen again. I do not run that fast unless i am running DOWNHILL.

Have a phenomenal day!

From jona on Wed, Sep 17, 2008 at 15:23:50

Kelli, you and I both know there are more levels of serious. For me, I have a lot of room to improve and be more serious with.

I guess to be more clear for me I need to have more focus, more dedication. I see you and Scott getting out every morning, going 7,8,9 and even 10 miles a day, and I struggle to get out of bed. Its a good thing for me to put up 2 days in a row.

I'm getting there, slowly but surly. My mind is getting more and more focus.

Thank you for the encouragement!

From Kelli on Wed, Sep 17, 2008 at 15:29:31

Funny thing is, I really am not that serious! But Scott sure is! I diddn't get out of bed this morning if that helps you any! I wish you lived closer, we would camp out on your front porch and make you come out and run! But, hey, this am stuff is almost over for me---back to evening running when the air gets cooler!

You are awesome, no matter what you think!!

Do you still want to try to do St George? I am talking to Scott on the phone right now and he is e-mailing to see if anyone has dropped out.

From jona on Wed, Sep 17, 2008 at 16:00:04

Crap, your not "that serious". That does it. When you come to chick me next time I'm running backwards. Then I can say we were going different directions.

I think I have switched at least for this week to PM running. I'll pay for it Saturday when I have to get up early...ha - who am I kidding, I haven't been up early on Sat in 3,4 weeks. Never mind.

From Kelli on Wed, Sep 17, 2008 at 16:14:49

I really am not! Scott pushes me---you witnessed it. I hate to disappoint, that is all! I do want to do well in St George, that is why I was willing to try a little harder. but all of my runs are typically in the high 8's and low 9's. I just hate to push. I will in a race, but that is it. If I were serious, I would be trying to get faster, and I am not!

Okay, we will drive to Utah County and park on your front porch at 4:45 am on Saturday morning! Oh, wait, then I would have to get up at like 3:30. Never mind.

From jona on Wed, Sep 17, 2008 at 16:38:02

Your a good runner, when if you decide to get faster, you will have some incredible times on your races. !!!

That is funny about coming to Ut County. Like you could get Scott to get off I-15. :-)))))

From Kelli on Wed, Sep 17, 2008 at 16:40:26

Ah, he'd do it for you. He likes you! But neither of us are willing to get up that early, so you are out of luck!

Next year I am aiming for a sub 3 hour marathon! Yeah, right. Next year I am aiming to be the wife waiting at the finish line to cheer people one. Yeah right on that one, too---I am too competitive to stand by and watch! I do not have to win, but I do have to race.

From jona on Wed, Sep 17, 2008 at 16:58:52

I don't blame you guys for not getting up that early. There is no way I would. Maybe later in the year (cooler) I can drive up for a Sat run or something.

I'm not that competitive, I like to be better than myself, and am disappointed when I don't do as well as I would like to. It would be cool to drop my PR on the marathon to under 3:15, but I know I have to be much more serious, much more dedicated. I kinda like where I am. I can see myself getting serious enough to get to 3:20, but not much better than that.

Got out very late.  9:45.  Ran a new route, I have driven that street, but I didn't realize the steepness of the hill.  But isn't that the way it always goes?  Hills/slopes always seem bigger/steeper when you run them.

Well, I was shooting for at least 6, I started running was about .5 miles from the truck and work called.  Turn around go back to the truck to discover as I was getting out of the truck I grabbed the wrong keys, locked the door, thus my truck keys were in the truck.  Well, need to get to work, so I just ran to the office (1.5 or so).  Worked on the problem, had my son drop some keys off to me, ran back to the truck.  Now I'm well into the work day so I just called it good.

Good reason not to carry cell phone when running (no work calls) but also good reason to carry so when locked out, you have a phone:) Great pace. Keep truckin'!

From jona on Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 14:13:12

Thanks Michelle, I considered not answering, but when the boss calls in the am like that it is usually not the greatest news. I would prefer more time between runs if I'm going to split them up. Oh, and more distance on each end would have been preferable.

I saw a 6 in there. You are a machine. Good run for a hot Friday.

From jona on Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 17:02:07

The 6 was all downhill, I was testing my relax and let the hill take me down the road technique. Had I known it was only .05 from going under 6 I would have tried to speed up rather than just relax. Long legs help, let the stride lengthen and speed goes right up.

From Kelli on Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 17:06:16

I actually get slower running downhill. It hurts my knee BAD.

Downhill a little or not, 6 is fast. When will I ever get you to admit you are fast?? We need to get you a really good marathon finish time, then I will beat it out of you.

From jona on Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 17:22:51

NEVER, as long as you are faster than I, I am slow. Your the fast one! :-) (and I haven't even began to talk about Scott, oh my fast!!!!!)

I will have a faster marathon time next year for sure. When I didn't make the draw this year I completely lost focus, I ran 2 times a week at most, and just didn't care. Next year I will be signed up with the runners series and I will run those races and get a guarantee entry.

From jona on Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 17:24:27

Oh Kelli, are you doing the pushup challenge? I got a bunch of people from work to go for it with me. I pre-tested today, we start Monday.

From Kelli on Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 20:42:56

I started with day one of the push up challenge and then forgot. BUT I WILL DO IT MONDAY! I am on board. Let's see who gets to 100 first. I think you may have me on that one since I did a whole whoppin' 12 on my pre-test. They were pretty iffy as far as form goes. I really think I may go back to girl push-ups because, after all, I am a girl!!!

Look at how fast you are when you lose focus. Maybe you should do it more often.

From jona on Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 23:15:05

No way on the loosing focus stuff. I don't EVER want another year like this last one!!!!!!

This girl at work does pushups 3-4 times a week, she joined with the group, she pre-tested at 40! I told her she just chicked every guy. BUT, I hadn't done my pretest yet, so I knew what I had to do. I did 41 and called it good. Glad I have some swimming muscles left over.

"20" - I don't know why, but I feel like I should only report 15.  I had to have my son to football by 7:30, and I am not a morning person, so I opted to put off (again) the big part of my running for the day to later.  I ran 3 miles prior to Brady' game.

1  8:39     1.00 mi     6.9 mph     145 bpm
2  7:58     1.00 mi     7.5 mph     155 bpm

4  0:31     0.05 mi     6.1 mph     160 bpm

Then Brady's friends Dad and I have been running our long Sat. runs together, we took off after the game for the long run.  Ran up the canyon again, he was wanting to get 15 in so I was happy that I got the three in earlier.

1     8:44     1.00 mi     6.9 mph     145 bpm
2     8:56     1.00 mi     6.7 mph     157 bpm

5     8:35     1.00 mi     7.0 mph     163 bpm
6     8:41     1.00 mi     6.9 mph     158 bpm
7     9:38     1.00 mi     6.2 mph     162 bpm
8     8:22     0.95 mi     6.8 mph     156 bpm
9     8:15     1.00 mi     7.3 mph     149 bpm
10     8:22     1.00 mi     7.2 mph     149 bpm
11     8:44     1.00 mi     6.9 mph     154 bpm
12     8:37     1.00 mi     7.0 mph     150 bpm
13     8:36     1.00 mi     7.0 mph     152 bpm
14     8:38     1.00 mi     6.9 mph     153 bpm
15     8:04     1.00 mi     7.4 mph     151 bpm
16     0:06     0.02 mi     9.8 mph     162 bpm

I was disappointed that I saw my watch flash lap 15 right at the end, so I stopped and turned it off.  Then I was looking at it and it read 14.97.  WHAT?  I don't know what happened.  I think MAYBE I hit the lap button on that 8th lap.  I just don't want to fall short on a race.  26.1 miles, and I fall over dead.

Well, got home and was feeling ok, so I thought I would try and get some torturous treadmill miles in.  Only made it 2.

So, total for the day is "20".

From Kelli on Tue, Sep 23, 2008 at 11:29:11

Hey, I just made that same comment about the wind. Strange.

And, why, if your legs are made of lead, are you running so fast?

How did the push-ups go?

From jona on Tue, Sep 23, 2008 at 12:02:59

Marion, is that my type of "wROCKED", I would say it really means waddle rocked. Because that is what I do, me and John the Penguin Bingham, waddle. "Waddle on my Friends."

Kelly, I hate when the wind is like that, its one thing to have cold, but cold and wind sucks. It wasn't that cold, 48, but the cold part of the wind went right through me, and the wind part of the wind wanted to push me backwards.

Push ups went ok. I'm amazed at the drain doing the simple sets puts on the max out part at the end. I'm such a wimp on push ups. I maxed that last set at 28. Are you doing them? I'll bet your chicking me big time!

From marion on Tue, Sep 23, 2008 at 12:27:43

Sorry Jon- "wROCKED" was just a typo due to brain injury. you rock ROCK!

Your push=ups are awesome! I am doing a modified lamo version of the push-up thing cause I can only do girl pushups. My whole goal in life is to be able to do 10 man push-ups. Again, I am the token lame chick on the blog to make the rest of you feel better about yourselves. I am happy to serve ;D

From jona on Tue, Sep 23, 2008 at 14:58:31

Oh dang, I want to be a waddler.

Marion, you will get there. The only reason I can do any is I swim laps occasionally. You will get there. Keep working on it. 10 man pu's will come before you know it.

From Kelli on Tue, Sep 23, 2008 at 16:02:56

Hey Kelli,

Its been a rough week. I did get out today though.

I have my fingers crossed, but I have considered it a long shot the whole time. So don't feel bad if it doesn't happen, I really appreciate you and Scott trying!!!!!

I may go down just so I can see everyone at the Friday night dinner.

From Kelli on Sun, Sep 28, 2008 at 11:19:09

That would be cool, although I would rather you run!!! But, hey, can you cheer for me at the finish? No one cheered for me last year. I beat the 3 men I ran with (I didn't even get to chick them, I left 2 of them at mile one) and the wives didn't even cheer for me. In fact, one barely acknowledged me as I ran by and the other wasn't even there until about 10 minutes later (she was sure none of us under trained people could make it in under 4 hours). Anyway, it stunk!

From jona on Sun, Sep 28, 2008 at 14:01:31

I'm right there with you Kelli, I have never had anyone at the end cheering. My brother in law was at all the marathons, well I guess the first one he was about .25 miles from the end, but didn't find me. The others he didn't make it to the end because his wife was almost an hour after me. Last year he even had my son with him and didn't get over to the finish till after I had been in for 20-30 min.

I would be happy to cheer for you.

But I am with you on running it. I do hope something comes through. :-)

Ran up the canyon again, that has become my favorite run of late, I think that the uphill is good to strengthen my legs and then the turn around and run back helps me learn to relax and let the hill take me.  If I get to run SG, I think/hope the tired I feel on this won't hit me until 19/20, then its a hold on close to 8:00 pace to the end.  I think I am missing strength.  I think that is what the extra 6-7 weeks of training would have bought me.  Right now I'm sitting at about 7-8 weeks of "training".  Well, that is what I will loosely call it.  It has been an increase of miles per week (except this week).  But lack consistent daily miles.

I'm tired, got done running, went to my sons football game, then left right after for Lagoon, and just got home.  Its 12.  On my feet all dang day.

I do like it, I DON'T like the wind though. I hate feeling like I'm being pushed backwards. And somehow I always have the wind that if I turned around and head what was "with" the wind, suddenly the wind will go the other way. Ughh.

But then I start heading west and the wind changes every time. The wind Gods hate me!

From jona on Sun, Sep 28, 2008 at 20:06:01

Leslie, I don't have an entry to SGM. Kelli (maybe more directly Scott) is looking to get me a entry via the Utah Highway Patrol. The UHP get some entries every year and every year there are people that drop out and they have extras. Scott/Kelli are trying to get me one. This will probably be the first year they don't have drop outs.

Up to a few weeks ago I had not trained, so I am feeling like I have a serious chore ahead of me IF I should happen to get an entry. FINGERS are CROSSED!

I'll be watching for the ChocoBear express!

Thanks Leslie, If I don't get in, I'm thinking I will go down and cheer my friends at the finish line.

I am also thinking if I don't get a lucky entry I need to take advantage of the training I have done and find some sort of race. I'm thinking maybe PF Change in AZ.

Kelli, you guys are so nice. I really appreciate you both for trying!!!!

Dusted off the ole running shoes, shook the cob webs off the legs muscles and went for a run this eve.  Ran down to the fitness center then ran two laps around the outdoor track, then back home.  Thought a lot about goals and desires for running.  Not much in the way of decisions, but thought a lot about it.  Some of my thoughts were about what was needed in order to reach my goal of BQ.  I know what needs to be done, I just have to find the commitment.

Well, not a bad run.

Great running!! Geesh, you are fast. Way to think while you run---there is not much else to do, huh??

From jona on Thu, Oct 02, 2008 at 14:36:48

Yeah, what else is there. When I go at night its even worse because there is little going on on the sides of the streets.

So, I think I may start seeing where my speed/pace is when I get my heart rate up to 180. I wonder what benefit there is to pushing up there and holding it. Find what feels like my max (actually 85-90% of max), then how long can I keep it there.

From Kelli on Thu, Oct 02, 2008 at 15:13:36

Are you supposed to get your heart rate that high?

From jona on Thu, Oct 02, 2008 at 15:46:17

I don't know, but I know its been that high when I'm spin class, so I think I need to push more running!

Nice miles and pace!! Isn't your garmin fun? I could get stuck playing with is ALL day long!!! I'm glad it doesn;t work indoors! :D

From jona on Fri, Oct 03, 2008 at 17:06:37

Do you use a garmin? Which one? I do like it. I keep finding things that I didn't know about. The core stuff is fun. I do however find that I have to ignore some things.

An interesting thing I like to watch is when I hit a stop light I have to wait for, I switch to the heart rate and see where I am, then check when I'm about to take off and see how much I drop. I have it in my head (wrong or right, good or bad I don't know) that the faster/more I can drop in a short time the better I think my condition is.

From marion on Fri, Oct 03, 2008 at 17:14:36

Too bad you didnt make the marathon - the runners were amazing out there in the rain.

From jona on Mon, Oct 06, 2008 at 17:23:35

I'm signed up for the runners series. This not getting in is not going to be an issue next year! I am just sick that I didn't get to run this year. I've had to stop reading the entries because it just makes me more sick. I'm amazed how much I had my mind set on being in the stupid race. Oh well another challenge.

Good luck with the Tri!

From jona on Tue, Oct 07, 2008 at 13:41:37

Hey you back! Yeah I'm alive.

Are you asking if I know anyone that can't swim or run?

Anyone can do these little tri's. When are we going to see you in one Marion? Your on that bike so much, and you have the run down.

From Marion\ on Tue, Oct 07, 2008 at 13:47:27

I'm sort of a chicken :) I was not it the pool all summer and can't get it in this year. (lame excuse) Right now I really just want to focus on a sub 2 hour half.

Crap! I need to focus on a shower and cleaning the kitchen! I am so easily distratcted from the stuff I hate doing!!

From jona on Tue, Oct 07, 2008 at 14:28:48

I'm easily distracted from stuff too. CRAP, like work. I should work more.

You so can get to that sub 2. I know you can. Hey, are you running that "Save a Sister" race in SG?

From Marion\ on Tue, Oct 07, 2008 at 14:32:30

I didn't get into the series :( So I am up for the lottery and in no rush to race in Washington Co. :D Not making it into the series took a ton of stress off of me. What time did you regiser for it? I logged on at noon on Monday and it was full. I was at work. I should have had someone else register me. Oh well :D It's all good!

Oh man I am bummed to hear that you didn't get in the series. I got my confirmation email at 9:24. I'm glad I didn't put it off. Last year I heard people were registering two days later.

And, not everyone can swim. I would drown for sure.

From jona on Wed, Oct 08, 2008 at 16:40:59

Funny Marion, funny. Its actually my mask that I wear so that I'm more generally accepted in public. I'm just hideous! :-)

I carried my swim gear in the pack, swim suit, goggles, cap, towel...... It was heavier on the way home. Everything was wet. You know what that is like don't you Kelli?

Kelli, I know you could do it. You are a determined person. I would think that you would love tri's. You like to do different things.

From Kelli on Wed, Oct 08, 2008 at 18:33:36

I figured out the bag later, but it was too late to erase the dumb question! I bet it was heavy, though! Dang water!

I ABSOLUTELY hate water!!! HATE IT! I do not get in the ocean EVER and it takes some serious coaxing by my 3 year old to even get me into a swimming pool. I just really hate it! I need a bi (instead of a tri). The biking would be fun with the running!!!

Whats with the dis-like of water?

From Kelli on Wed, Oct 08, 2008 at 19:50:41

I am sure it comes from sometime in the womb. I bet I just freaked out the entire time I was in that scary, dark, cramped, wet place. All of my phobias in one place! BLAME IT ON THE WOMB!

From Kelli on Wed, Oct 08, 2008 at 19:53:13

I did not mean to submit that---I was not done.

Where on earth is Huntington? I do not own a bike, but I would like one for Christmas if Santa will bring me one! I did not know they had just bike and run races, but I am in!!! Scott wants to do tri's, I will do Duo's (I like the name Bi's better).

Great, now I have to work on that!

Singing - "Blame it on the womb" Milli Vanilli.

You and Scott could do relay's on tri's. (Scott could do the swim part) I think if you could conquer your fear of water, you would LOVE tri's. As much "other" stuff that you do, you would love them!

I think I do not believe in conquering my fears. We will see...

From jona on Thu, Oct 09, 2008 at 12:02:42

Oh come on, did you swim when you were a kid?

I know you can conquer your fear if you want to.

From Kelli on Thu, Oct 09, 2008 at 12:29:00

Nope, i did not. I got in the water and played, but I never swam. I mastered the art of jumping off the diving board without going under. For real---it can be done.

It is just not my cup of tea. But, who knew running would be a few years ago? Right?

From jona on Thu, Oct 09, 2008 at 12:33:03

What about hot tub's? That more your speed? Maybe you could get someone to let you scoooooot around the edge of a hot tub for the swim part. :)

I'm just teasing you. You do so many different things to stay in shape, it seems like a natural fit to do tri's. Your awesome girl!

From Kelli on Thu, Oct 09, 2008 at 12:43:14

Nope, hate hot tubs. Will not get in them. I will sit on the edge and put my feet in, though sometimes. On our 15th anniversary we sat out in the nice hot tub at the super plush hotel---Scott in it, me on the side, in a chair, reading a book. Fun times.

Great miles and way to FINALLY get back there. And you picked such a great COLD day to do it!

From jona on Sun, Oct 12, 2008 at 22:46:48

Thanks Kelli, Glad someone is keeping an eye on me.

I'm kinda surprised you don't do spin. I guess if your gym doesn't have it, that would make it difficult. Depending on the class/teacher, you can get a seriously hard workout. Although not running muscles, but hard workout nevertheless. If you lived closer, you could go to the one in the Orem Fitness Center.

Woo-hoo, look at those speedy times. And, how did you like not running alone?

From jona on Tue, Oct 14, 2008 at 15:37:46

I think running with someone helps. I should find some people to run with. Phil pooped out a little to early.

I used to run with my ex-wife, ran with her every day. Sometimes there would be another lady join in. I don't mind running with others. About 4 months ago I was meeting a guy from the old ward and running with him, he was painfully slow, but he needed the commitment from another runner being there, so I stuck it out with him. Until he no-showed 3-4 times.

Running MilesSwimming YardsBike Miles

Ran the Fitness center loop so I could get some swimming in.  Swam 400 m.  I couldn't get my breathing right.  This happens sometimes running when I just can't seem to get in sync.  I go through the whole running thinking I need to find a way to get that one big breath.  When I was swimming, I would get about 35-40 meters down the lane and feel like I had to take a couple deep breathes.  Much the same as when running, but here I will inhale water if I'm not careful.  Just couldn't get in sync.

On the upside, this is the fastest I have run this route.  I have been trying to remember to write what happens while run, or what I think about.  My memory stinks, and when I'm running I always think "now remember to write about that."

So tonight I passed a kid on a long board.  He pulled out of a side street about 200 yrds ahead of me, I didn't think I stood a chance of catching him, it took me a half mile.  He didn't know I was back there for awhile, then I think he heard my steps.  He looked back at me, I noticed his pushing came with more frequency.  But, I got him.

From jona on Thu, Oct 16, 2008 at 17:41:10

Oh yes you would/do. And I am really ok with it. If you get a faster time because you use me as a rabbit, then go go go! I'm just happy that I can say I can run with the fast young women. I don't even want to try to stay with the likes of Scott or Scooby (by the way had a birthday on the 14th I think). I watch Walters and Tyler S blogs and oh my. Those guys are fast.

From Kelli on Thu, Oct 16, 2008 at 17:51:29

Yes, Walter and Tyler are amazing! Scott is just okay! He can not get the distance thing worked out, but he is fast when he does not have too far to go!

Scooby is an anti-blogger lately! I will PM him a big HAPPY Belated!

From jona on Thu, Oct 16, 2008 at 18:01:56

I think Scott is fast. He is soooooo strong, if he can get the endurance side down, wow.

From Kelli on Thu, Oct 16, 2008 at 18:30:44

He has it all down but the cramping that occurs somewhere around mile 14 or so. That is a tricky issue. he had no problems with our long training runs, but we are not pushing like you do in a marathon. So, he needs to figure that out and then there will be no stopping him.

From jona on Thu, Oct 16, 2008 at 21:01:55

I have no doubt he will figure it out. I hate cramping.

I have a friend that want to run this Turkey Tri 5k faster than he has run it in the last 3 years, so he keeps asking me to run it with him.  Sasha's advice keeps echo'g in my mind.  Phil' best time I think he said was 8:25 pace.  The other day he ran with me, and stayed with me for about a half mile at 7:20 pace.  He seems fast enough, but like Sasha says, he just doesn't have endurance.  It showed again tonight, faded big with every mile.

So, I was thinking, how much faster does the average runner run a race if they only run the same speed/distance for training?  I run 3 miles everyday, 10 minute pace.  How much faster might I run a 3 mile race?  Some logic tells me no difference.  But I know I run races faster than training.

Hummmmm.  Oh well.  Good miles for me.  This will probably be my longest run this week.  Hopefully not my last this week.

Had to get a run in any run.  I've been trying to hit a small goal.  For some it is easily attainable, but for me.......anyway.  I set a goal of getting to a hundred miles.  First time I have set a goal like that, so I gave myself plenty o time.  1 month.  I have 14 days left, and I'm just under half way (52 miles left).  BUT I kinda let this escape my memory for a few days, and am playing catch up now.  So, I figure I will get the goal, and then I can up the challenge, 120 in a month, something like that.  This is just the bench mark, and a way to see if its something that take control of me and gets me out more often.  Training for a marathon does that, I hope this does.

From jona on Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 01:29:48

Kelli, you do that in like a week and a half. I was a wimp and gave myself a MONTH.

From Kelli on Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 09:40:20

ONCE I did it in a week and half---just once. I have slowed WAY down!!!

Took my son to Las Vegas to watch the Beatles Love show.  WOW great show.  I loved it!  It was one of those things that you just don't want to end.  Amazing show.

This morning I went for a run on part of the "strip".  Was interesting to see the guys/and gals still passing out the porn cards, and the people just coming out of the casino at 7:30 am, still in their night "dresses" and "suits".  I'm glad I live a different life.  I did see about 10 other runners.

It's always interesting to run in/down the big city streets.  Although, difficult to keep a decent pace.  When I got back to the hotel I realized I didn't get a picture, so I ran back about .7 miles or so and had someone take a picture of me with Lady Liberty in the back ground.  The picture wasn't that good, and I forgot to turn my watch off, so that mile was a really slow pace.

Nice shot! I am guessing the person who took the shot was drunk or my mother. Fun times with your son! Good boy, running on vacation!

From Kelli on Tue, Oct 21, 2008 at 12:45:44

Am I supposed to only be able to see half of your head???

I so would not dare to run in Vegas, they are on Cops way too much. That place is crazy! But I am glad you did and glad you guys had fun!

From jona on Tue, Oct 21, 2008 at 13:02:51

Funny Marion, she wasn't drunk, but she wasn't happy to help. She wasn't about to do anything extra, she took two and gave the phone back. The other one has the Statue half covered by the little building she works at. Oh well.

Kelli, you can't see me at all? At 7:30 am the strip isn't that bad. All the cops action was happening 3-8 hours prior.

From Kelli on Tue, Oct 21, 2008 at 13:25:21

I can see your nose and up.

From jona on Tue, Oct 21, 2008 at 15:45:21

Ok, you can see my nose. Isn't that half my head. Oh no, do I have a huge chin and I just don't know it?

From Kelli on Tue, Oct 21, 2008 at 15:51:31

Well, you have a hat on, so it appears that I can only see half of your head. i can not see your nostrils, so i really can not see all of your nose!

From jona on Tue, Oct 21, 2008 at 15:51:57

Kelli, I went back and re-read your comment. I should read, re-read all comments before I say anything. I was remembering that I wrote about the half face picture on facebook, and when you wrote that I was thinking "hum, Kelli is having computer issues again, can't see all the picture." But in reality you had no idea that the picture was correct and you were asking. I sure should read everything.

From jona on Tue, Oct 21, 2008 at 15:52:44

At least you can't see UP my nostrils. :-)

From Kelli on Tue, Oct 21, 2008 at 15:56:04

Yes, good point. And I have no clue what you are talking about. I am lost!

I have not visited facebook in a while...maybe I should. I am working on some church stuff right now (thus the ever presentness on the computer).

From Smooth on Wed, Oct 22, 2008 at 22:21:40

Hey Jona,

Good for you, running while on vaca.

Two years ago in March I was in Vegas watching the MWC Basketball tournament. We stayed at the Luxor, I ran down the length of the strip from Luxor to the Stratosphere Needle and back on Fri.AM Repeat that twice on Sat.AM for a long run of 18 miles. I thought it was neat that I could see my reflection from windows and bus-stop keoske.

Did you run up and down those stairs on the crosswalks? My favorite part was running on the wood planks in front of Treasure Island and the trees in front of Belagio and all the music coming out of NY NY. The funny part was some hotel greeters or tour guides saw me passing them twice in front of them and twice across the street (I think my mileage that day was 18). They were flabbergasted and cheered wildly.

Wish I had taken pictures. I like yours even though it only showed your eyes.

From jona on Wed, Oct 22, 2008 at 23:07:19

Smooth,

I did run up and down those stairs/bridges. I loved when people would look at me like I was completely nuts. You put some awesome miles in running up/down the strip then up/down the strip again. I only put a few in. I had to be somewhere in the AM, but thats just a easy excuse, because I wouldn't have done what you did if I had time, not at least that day. Your awesome.

I was glad I got the picture. I had actually forgotten. When I was walking around the hotel to cool off I remembered, so I ran back to that intersection and had someone take the picture. So I got the picture and about an extra 1.2 miles.

Got out.  Yeah!

Legs felt heavy the whole way.  Ran part way up 2000 N in Orem, that hill always takes it out of me, BUT at the same time I can tell my conditioning pretty good on that, out of shape it will knock me down to 9 min pace, in better shape I can hold somewhat close to 8.  In shape I can stay under 8, close to 7:30 pace.  The part I run is about .75 miles (gps reads 120' climb in .5 miles).  Overall good run, shouldn't have been a slacker yesterday.

Nice run there especially on the .75 mile uphill. A friend of mine once said "Hills are our friends." That became my mantra when I'm wheezing and huffing up a hill. Good job for getting out there. How was the traffic on the streets where you ran. Seems like a nice block on the northwest part of Orem.

From jona on Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 00:49:27

Thanks Smooth, That's a good mantra. I don't mind running hills, unless I'm out of shape, then they are hard, and I'm not liking them as much.

The traffic/streets are good. The only thing I worry about is not being seen. I think I may start counting how many times I almost get hit. Oh, I've taken to tipping my hat when someone waits for me or sees me and doesn't make me run through (behind because they pull so far into the intersection) their car.

I used to wave, but I want people to better know that I appreciate they didn't plow me down.

From Kelli on Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 12:55:51

Seriously, Jon, why do you run so fast??? STOP IT!

From Kelli on Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 12:58:39

Oh, and I LOVE your new title!!! That is so perfect for a run, and life sometimes!

I talked to my single friend (the one with the cheater husband who "fixed" my computer---I gotta get on that) yesterday for the first time in a bit. What a life, wow. She is having fun, but life is still rough, her x is a jerk, and dating is a pain! Anyway, I thought of while I was talking to her, because of the computer and the single life. She was saying how hard it is to be single after being married so long and i can only imagine.

Okay, enough of that!!

From jona on Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 13:14:40

So FAST. HA, Kelli, I'm just trying hard to keep up with you!!!!

I understand your friend 100%. Single life, while I have only been in for a little while, stinks. At least she is having fun, and has dated.

When are you going to get to the PC? I have an extra hard drive here, you just let me know when I can help!

From Kelli on Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 13:22:56

I will probably get to it when I get to everything else, which would be never. I really do need to get on it, it just still worries me. I do not want to LOSE anything off of my computer!!

She got divorced last February, but he moved out about 6 months before. She has 3 little kids, so life is hard, her x is remarried and does not help much. But she is DATING some, so that is good for her!

Jon, look at your splits and your avg pace!! You are FAST. I think you must be a little like Scott, and you slow down after, say, 15 miles or so???

From Marion on Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 13:28:56

Look how fancy you are with detail link and all! Cool dude!

nice miles:) I LOVE the new blog title! So so true!

From jona on Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 13:38:52

Girl, you won't loose the data if we get that drive in there. You can move everything over to the secondary drive and then fix Windows. It will work!

I hate hearing about men that don't meet their obligations to their kids. How can they live with themselves? Another yuck is why would his new wife permit this action? SELFISH!!! Makes me sick, literally.

I know my biggest problem in running is getting out consistently and increasing my endurance. I know I fall apart late in races. I'm getting better in the shorter races. When I look at my training - # days run per week, distance run per workout/week, they prove that I need to increase both to have better longer races.

From jona on Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 13:42:07

Thanks Marion. Now if Garmin wouldn't be working on their website.

Hey, I was thinking about you and our discussion we had once about having a long run with a group of people. We need to think/talk about doing that.

From Kelli on Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 13:51:16

I will drive there, seriously! If soccer is over, I am there (and before basketball starts!)

Jon, I am afraid of computers. Plus, I hate making you drive all the way down here to fix it (we are free Saturday night???) ;o)

You are seriously speedy, I am not. BUT what I lack there I make up for in endurance. I can run all day. That is why I am so intimidated by short races. People think I am this "amazing" runner, but I really struggle for about 5 miles!

From Marion on Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 13:54:07

How about a halloween FRB 5k?

From Kelli on Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 14:06:46

10k?

From jona on Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 14:12:29

Marion - GREAT idea. Lets do that!

Kelli, Don't be afraid of computers, they are really pretty dumb - you are much smarter, I can't make it Saturday. Next week I can make it up that way Monday and Wednesday evenings. It isn't that big a deal to make a little drive up. I may be able to come up next Saturday during the day.

Speaking of coming up your way, do your kids go to Foothills elem? I know a teacher there.

You would do great at shorter races. I see your miles and paces of your runs, you don't give yourself enough credit for your "short game."

From Kelli on Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 14:14:50

I was kidding about Saturday, but we will take you whenever we can have you!

My kids WOULD go to Foothills, but they go to a charter school. One son went there for Kindergarten last year. Which teacher do you know??

From jona on Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 14:21:27

10k, 5k, both good, what about 15k (9.32 miles)?

I know Ruthann Taylor. I don't know her well, met her about a month ago, and have talked to her a couple times. She lives right close to the school, or Kneaders I don't remember which she said. I was thinking you lived close to there somewhere.

I'll figure out when I can come up and see if you and Scott are going to be around.

From Marion on Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 14:28:39

so Saturday the 1st of November? I can make it ON Haloween if that works too.

From jona on Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 14:31:14

I think I can make Sat Nov 1 AM. I will know more after this Sat. My son is winding up football season. If they win Sat, they may play the following Sat, but I won't know if/ or time until Sat.

From Kelli on Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 17:02:19

SOROF??? Does that mean something or was it a typo?

Kneaders and the school are right by each other, so she probably lives by both and she probably lives by me somewhere. I do not know who she is, though.

Nov 1st would be fun, I am game for anything! We will drive wherever.

Met Phil to run the Turkey 5k route.

Phil called it good at  about 2.57.  I think he will have a hard time with getting a better time on his 5k for this race.  He just doesn't put a lot of training into running.  He bikes and swims, but very little running.

Added some on the end after Phil droped off.  The top of my achillies is huting.  Last time this was going on I needed to get new shoes.  I haven't been keeping really good track of the miles on these shoes, but I doubt there could be more than 275.  So I'm a little concerned.  Last night I had a huge muscle cramp in my left calf.  I think I need to drink more watter.  (I say as I take a sip of my Raspberry Crystal Light).

Your beverage choice shrieks that you're secure with your masculinity (I say as I drink my sweetened vanilla rooibos tea).

From jona on Fri, Oct 24, 2008 at 10:38:05

That is dang funny. At least it was a 44 oz. :) :)

Never had vanilla rooibos tea. :)

Food and restaurants are kinda funny when looked at along the feminine/masculine lines. I kinda wonder if a man should be caught going to Mimi's Cafe alone (worse yet, not sure if it's a local place, but... "Apple Spice Junction", now that is a chick place). I'll sit at my desk and eat french fries, but I would feel a little girly if I sat there eating petite carrots. Funny stuff.

From montelepsy on Sat, Oct 25, 2008 at 00:32:56

It is funny how food can be viewed that way. That eating meat is considered macho. If all it takes to be a man is having 99 cents for a hamburger, then our standards for manhood are a little too low.

Drinking Crystal Light by the keg, now that's something. :)

From montelepsy on Fri, Oct 31, 2008 at 14:13:30

Are you training for a tri? I see you've got the swim tracker up.

From jona on Fri, Oct 31, 2008 at 15:18:14

I train right now for a tri about this time of year, after I BQ I want to finish an Ironman. For right now I am content with a small "sprint" tri here or there. I would log my swim yards when I do them, but I don't want those adding to my run total. I've seen some people on the blog get upset about bike miles getting included on the run totals for the leader board. So, I just write them in.

Do you do any swimming?

From montelepsy on Sat, Nov 01, 2008 at 12:23:18

There's no pool here or else I would. :)

I used to spend more time in the pool than on the road. It's changed in the last year, though.

When I'm back stateside, I plan on swimming a whole lot.

I'm not a great swimmer, just a very persistant one.

From jona on Sat, Nov 01, 2008 at 12:43:50

No pool? Yuck. I'll bet that is one of those highly missed things over there.

I like to swim, but its more time consuming than running. But I think you get a fantastic workout swimming. I'm not good either, I'm better when I consistently get in the darn pool.

John, Scott and I ran most of the time together until Scott took off and left us.  He is so strong.  I need to do more hill work.

I was fun meeting everyone.  I wish I could have stayed around and socialized.  I had told some friends that I would run the 5k part of the Turkey Tri with them, so I had to get back to Orem by 9.  This was fun and challenging.  There were some beautiful views of the valley when the sun came up.  I hope Harold got some pictures of that, I saw he had his camera.

From jona on Mon, Nov 03, 2008 at 00:56:28

Smooth,

It was nice to meet you too. Scott pushed me good on that run, I hope that I did that for those that I went and ran the 5k with. They ask me to run it so that they had a rabbit out there. I was tired, but managed to pull out in front and make them chase me.

The link thing is easty, just bellow and to the right of the "Underline" icon when your entering your blog, you will see a icon that is like a globe and a chain link across it. Highlight the word you want to link then click that icon. Type your link in address box provided. (like www.google.com).

Chicking: Well, I don't think its a real word. It is when a girl (chick) passes a boy runner. Boys are "supposedly" faster. HA! What I know is at least three of the women at the run Saturday have run a marathon faster than me. :-) Yeah for them!

Have been lazy this week.  I was helping a friend all day Monday and never got to run, and if I don't get out Monday I probably wont get out until Wednesday because I have a lot of things scheduled on Tuesdays.

Ran over towards the old neiborhood this evening.  I'm probably just a big wimp, but the hill from State St to Main or 400 E or 800 E on 2000 N. just beats me up everytime.  Tonight I wimped out and went to Main, then down to 1600 N.  Then I went more East to 400 E.  Real runners go up 2000.  :-(

Room for improvement.

Looks like you had an awesome run today!! Nice pace.

So, you going up 2000 tomorrow??? (Wherever that is!!)

From jona on Thu, Nov 06, 2008 at 01:21:31

Sorry Teena, 2000, I meant 2000 N. Darn street gets me! I will start running that hill more often, not sure I will get it tomorrow, but I will get to it more!

From Carolyn on Thu, Nov 06, 2008 at 06:49:09

Thanks for the words of encouragement jona. Good luck qualifying for Boston! I'm working on just being able to run this crazy amount of miles but hopefully that turns into qualifying as well...

From jona on Thu, Nov 06, 2008 at 16:04:53

I hope so. I don't walk on it, but it sure would be nice to run up it at a good pace and not feel like I'm about dead.

Went up the canyon with my friend Bill.  He took his kid in the runners stroller.  Those miles were a little slower.  Bill stopped and let his son play/walk while I took off up to the 4 mile mark.  Then I picked him up on the downside.

I missed the running group running the Jordan River Parkway trail, BUT my son was starting defense on the peewee Pro bowl team.  They won.  Yeah!

re: the whole fat-people-sucking thing. Well, honestly I'd take that comment off or at least amend it at this point if I could figure out how to edit that part of my profile! People in America are actually socializing each other to get fatter, and they especially don't tolerate skinny people. Even "normal weight" people don't tolerate healthfully slim people, but try to socialize them into gaining weight. I'm not saying that fat people are inherently worse people than other people, just that being fat and tolerating it, and not doing anything about it, and not encouraging one's overweight friends (to do what they should for their own health and society as well, since fatness is a social disease) is a psychiatric disease of it's own, that's all.

From jona on Sun, Nov 09, 2008 at 02:47:47

Ezra, If you log into your blog, so that you see your calendar you will see a link on the left side towards the bottom that reads "Blog Options". Click that link. It will take you to the screen that should allow you to edit your profile.

It doesn't seem like making a generalized comment like that will help anyone "to do what they should for their own health".

Ezra, I don't want to come across as perfect or a "know it all". I do think it wrong to make someone feel bad about themselves in the effort to encourage them get healthy/loose weight.

From jona on Sun, Nov 09, 2008 at 12:38:48

Thanks Mike, I was excited. He played well. It is one of those things as a parent I'm both sad to see the season end, and GLAD its over at the same time. Now I don't have to get him to his games Sat AM. But, basketball season is starting soon, so that will fill that void! :(, :)

From Kelli on Sun, Nov 09, 2008 at 16:39:04

I was just thinking that Basketball season begins soon, and then my Saturday's are shot again! But I will enjoy them while I still can!!

GREAT RUN, maybe next week?!? YES, we are going again. We like it.

From jona on Sun, Nov 09, 2008 at 20:45:14

I'm planning on coming this next weekend. I look forward to seeing everyone.

I don't know if I can make it the whole 20 miles in two weeks, so maybe I will head up the short group. And help/find a way to aid you long runners with water.

From Teena on Sun, Nov 09, 2008 at 20:55:06

Nicely done on your run Jon. I'm especially impressed with the extra .01!! You're funny.

Congrats to your boy as well.

From Kelli on Sun, Nov 09, 2008 at 22:27:34

You CAN do 20. Just take some walk breaks if you have to. Or, run and get my a hamburger and some fries and meet me at mile 15!!

From jona on Mon, Nov 10, 2008 at 00:25:02

Teena, you know it. That extra .01 was the most difficult. I think I will start reporting # of steps next. :) Just kidding. The guy I was with probably thought I was completely nuts. I told him I had to run just a little further to make sure I hit 8. I took about 20 steps and stopped. I shouldn't report that stuff, speedsters are always faster than me in the very short distances. It takes me 20 steps just to get to half speed.

Kelli, if I remember correctly you like Iceburg. There is one just down the street from where that trail is.

AM - Went out on the streets, didn't have much time, so ran a quick route around my place, was hoping for 5, came out to 4.29.  I still felt pressed for time so I called it good rather than adding more.  Here all the details for that one.

PM - Took the kids to the fitness center.  Again, want to get 4+ miles and that didn't happen.  The track downstairs is only tolerable in bad bad weather.  6 + laps is a mile (I think its 6.1), I ran 18, then added one to make sure I got 3.  Then I walked a cool down lap and thought that I really wanted more, so I ran some more.  The last lap was 58 sec, and according to the sign on the wall there that equals a 6:00 min mile pace.

Went with Kelli and Scott, Britta, Leslie and Harold, Maurine, and Odee to Lehi and ran part of the JRP (Jordan River Parkway).  Odee and Leslie tried to dance once which sent Leslie to the ground.  Hope you are ok Leslie.  Talk about strong runner, Scott and I could hear her fall 30 feet away, it was a hard fall, but she kept going for 8 miles or so.  TOUGH woman!

The run was good.  We got lost at one point so that added some distance.  Scott is so dang strong.  Makes me want to get into he gym and lift.  When I grow up I want to be strong like Scott. :-)

It was good to see Kelli and Scott.  Nice to talk to Britta, I met Britta last time, but actually talked for a minute.  I did get chicked at the end.  Dang kids, just to much energy for this old man.  :-)

Good run guys.  Thank you for letting me tag along!

Maurine and Leslie, it was good to see you too.

Awesome dancer Leslie! :-)

I really like meeting up with everyone. Even if we don't "run together."

We will have to try harder to run with you guys next time. Good run!

From leslie on Sat, Nov 15, 2008 at 15:28:08

That would be torture for you to slow down that much! We are so happy to sweep the trail for you and start our mornings together, but that was nice of you to say!!!

Hey, Leslie, you guys BEAT us to the car!!!

From Kelli on Sat, Nov 15, 2008 at 16:16:54

And Scott is strong, too strong for his own good sometimes!

Kelli, we are pretty speedy!!!

From jona on Sat, Nov 15, 2008 at 17:03:49

Leslie, I agree with Kelli, you beat us to the car. We barely got there to see you drive off.

Kelli, lets see, I was running, you and Britta were running, you guys passed me. HUMMMMM, CHICKED! AGAIN!

From jona on Sat, Nov 15, 2008 at 17:05:36

Leslie, PS - Really, it is good to slow down sometimes. I would enjoy getting to know you Harold and Maurine. I really like Odee, what kind of dog is he?

From Kelli on Sat, Nov 15, 2008 at 17:06:43

I believe you were walking. Not to mention that you added some extra miles running back to get us as we WALKED from fatigue!

Isn't Odee a lab?

From jona on Sat, Nov 15, 2008 at 17:15:55

I was fatigued, just another way I got chicked. You guys are in way better shape.

I don't think Odee is a lab, maybe some lab in there, but not full. He is bigger than a lab.

From Kelli on Sat, Nov 15, 2008 at 17:23:42

I just thought he was a BIG lab.

By the way, you look skinnier?!? Have you lost weight. And, if so, why can't I?

From jona on Sat, Nov 15, 2008 at 17:35:09

That is dang funny Kelli. I don't keep track of weight. I do know I haven't been eating really well, so it wouldn't surprise me if I'm down.

For what its worth, I don't think you need to loose another pound.

From leslie on Sat, Nov 15, 2008 at 17:38:08

Odee is half Golden Retriever and half Great Pyranese,we shave him, he has a long coat normally.

Jon you need to come do the Red Mountain 50K with us too!!!

From jona on Sat, Nov 15, 2008 at 17:48:07

I wondered if there were some Pyranese in him. Wonderful for you to have such a friend.

I don't think I could run 50 if there were a steak at the end.

From leslie on Sat, Nov 15, 2008 at 17:57:04

It is only 32 miles! You speedsters just have to take it slow and enjoy the scenery, I think it is easier than a marathon because you do slow down and soak it all in! You would love it.

From leslie on Sat, Nov 15, 2008 at 17:58:26

And there is definitely a steak at the end and an ice cream sundae!!!

From jona on Sat, Nov 15, 2008 at 17:59:29

First of all, The running endorphins must be getting to your head, I'm not a speedster.

I'll have to look at that race. Would be cool to be able to say I ran 50.

NICE!!

From jona on Sat, Nov 15, 2008 at 19:10:29

From Kelli on Sat, Nov 15, 2008 at 22:25:45

Thanks Jon. (I will pay you later!!!) I am actually pretty darn happy where I am, I just have this little goal to get below what I weighed when I got married just to see how it feels. But, I like food. That is an understatement! I LOVE food.

You need to eat better, then! I will send you some more recipes for my fattening food, and I will being you Kneaders for lunch every day! That ought to do it!

And Odee is a beautiful dog!

From Kelli on Sat, Nov 15, 2008 at 22:30:32

I just noticed Leslie said, "ONLY 32 MILES!!" What kind of a crazy person says ONLY????

From jona on Sun, Nov 16, 2008 at 13:34:37

I'll take any recipes I can get. I too love food, love to cook. But cooking for one STINKS. I only have the kids two nights a week.

From tarzan on Sun, Nov 16, 2008 at 14:15:02

Jon - I can really relate to that. Since my divorce I swear I either live on tuna fish sandwiches or protein shakes or frozen food. It seems like too much work to cook just for myself and I have to break that habit.

From Kelli on Sun, Nov 16, 2008 at 16:19:49

Just half the recipes, then you have leftovers for a few meals. Or cook the stuff you can freeze! Look at me talk as if I am an expert!

What kind of recipes do you want?? I still need to post the KILLER Chili recipe (wins every time at the Chili cook-off). However, it makes a TON, but I hear it freezes well.

From britta on Sun, Nov 16, 2008 at 23:05:28

Really you are going to consider a 50K? The thought of one terrifies me!!!!

Happy running this week.

From jona on Mon, Nov 17, 2008 at 00:53:58

Maurine, I would like to change those darn cooking habits to. When the kids are over I cook, but not much if any when they aren't.

Kelli, I would love the Chili recipe. I like easy, and Italian.

Britta, you could run a 50k this week, you and Kelli didn't even break a sweat on Sat. :-) You guys are awesome. Its only 10k further than the marathon.

From Kelli on Mon, Nov 17, 2008 at 13:09:06

It is NOT an easy recipe, though. It is an all afternoon event. You would have to cook it on a Saturday or Sunday or a day off of some kind!

I will post it tonight for ya!

From Kelli on Mon, Nov 17, 2008 at 13:16:25

YOU ARE A HOT DISCUSSION!!!!!

From jona on Mon, Nov 17, 2008 at 13:28:51

Kelli, I still want the recipe. I don't mind recipes that take a long time. Easy to me is more that I understand what to do. Like I have no idea what "Heavy Sauce Pan" is.

From Kelli on Mon, Nov 17, 2008 at 13:33:41

IMPROVISE!!! I do not either, in fact, I do not even know what a saucepan is. A pan that it will fit in is all I care about!

It is an easy recipe, just takes time!! I will get it here when I have time to type it tonight!

From jona on Mon, Nov 17, 2008 at 14:06:57

Thanks. I get scared off or do like you said and improvise from recipes when I don't know some of the things they want me to do. But I will learn.

Thanks again, I'm looking forward to the recipe.

Very interesting Jon!!

From jona on Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 11:09:22

Teena, you know it, maybe run a race in one of those SWEEEEEEEET outfits.

I would only do it if I could have a HUGE fro. Then I would be super stylin'!

From Kelli on Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 15:02:31

Jon, whatever! That is fast---I can not do that! You are a sprinter by nature I think. I am more of the long distance runner---the longer the better.

I would pay to see you run in one of those outfits!

From jona on Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 15:15:49

Kelli, I would do it if I could talk others into it.

Oh, I think there is a 5k in Orem at the end of Dec that you have to wear a "TuTu" (not sure I spelled that right.) We should all run that. FUN!

From Kelli on Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 15:20:00

I am sure I would look great in a tutu! I am in!! Nothing would beat seeing all of you men in one.

I really will get you that recipe---promise! I read all day yesterday and never returned to the computer! But, i will be back this afternoon to give it to you---I have to get to the park right now, I am late!

From jona on Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 15:33:24

I think it would be fantastic to get everyone to run in tutu's. I can just see the sprint at the end. FUNNY! Would be best if the weather is warm enough that everyone would be required to run with just running shorts under the tutu, no pants. FUNNY FUNNY FUNNY!!!!! I can just see my chicken legs under a tutu.

From jona on Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 15:38:20

Oh Kelli, no stress on the recipe. I knew you would be in that book until you finished it, when I read you were starting it I knew you would bury your nose in it until it was done. That book/series does that to people. It went through my house. Even my teenage boys read it. Our copies went through my oldest boys soccer team.

From britta on Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 18:03:57

I am in for the Tutu run!

So Kelly does this mean you like the Twilight series?

I am going to the midnight showing tomorrow. I am really excited. I have never been to a midnight showing.

I do feel a little emabarassed to be a part of all the crazy women but nonetheless I am so excited to see the movie.

From Kelli on Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 18:20:21

Yes, I liked it, and I am embarrassed to admit it. I can not believe BOYS read it. WOW. Scott would rather die than read ANYTHING I read.

The recipe is coming...I have to go to the bank real fast first!!!

From jona on Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 18:20:37

Now now girls. I hope we don't get to much "Edward" talk going here. Dr T talk is enough. Just imagine them in Tutu's! :-)

I will find info on the TuTu run. This could be fun!

From jona on Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 18:24:22

Kelli, don't get me wrong, I DID NOT read it. I started listening to it while I ran, but I would find that like with music I will start thinking about something and 20 minutes later I come back to reality. So I gave up trying to listen to it.

But the boys on the soccer team did. There were about 6 or 7 that did. Now, they contacted my son in private and it was almost a hush hush thing.

From Kelli on Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 19:23:26

Okay, back from the bank. And I bought a bunch of Diet Coke, too. I need it.

Here ya go:

The BEST AWARD Winningest Chili

3-4 cans white beans (10 oz, drained)

2 onions

48 oz chicken broth

--boil and simmer 1.5 hours then add:

4 cups cooked and cubed chicken

1 can (7 oz) chopped green chiles

6-8 cloves minced garlic

3 tablespoons oregano

4 tsp cumin

1 1/2 tsp cayanne pepper

--boil and simmer 1 hour, remove from heat and add:

1 cup sour cream

3 cups shredded monterey jack cheese

DRESSING:

1/4 cup vinegar

1/2 cup sugar

juice from a lemon

1 tsp onion powder

1 tsp paprika

2 tsp celery seed

1 tsp salt

1/3 cup vegetable oil

chopped tomatoes (canned or fresh)

cilantro or parsley

---refrigerate 1 hour or more

When you serve the chili, you just put like 1/4 of a cup or so of the dressing in before. It is so good! If you have leftovers, you store the chili and the dressing separately, do not mix them!

ENJOY!!!!!!

Okay, now that I typed that all up, I am going to have to post in on my blog tomorrow. BUT you got it first!

Good song that I will listen to in a few minutes when I go running.  If you have seen the movie Last of the Mohicans you will remember the song.  The movie has some pretty good violence, so here are two links, this one that has the song but no movie clips that I remember, and this one that has a bunch of clips from the movie, thus some pretty good violence.  (Oh, kinda long as well)

Ran up Provo Canyon.  Had an ok pace going up, was kinda cold.  Pushed a little on the way down.  Down hill sure hits the knees hard.  But was nice to have a faster pace though.

I'm looking forward to running on T-day for the Turkey 4 miler, then seeing everyone on Sat.

Hey Marion, Good to hear from you! Seems like you haven't been around. But then again I've seen your posts. I better comment more on your blog so I can keep track of my Payson friend.

From tarzan on Sat, Nov 22, 2008 at 15:42:39

Good job running today Jon!

Where are you moving to?

We were talking about the tutu run today, but that is also the day I am planning on joining a Buffalo Run training run on Antelope Island.

I am doing a fun 5K next Saturday. My sister will be walking with me. We are doing a Santa Run up in Ogden.

From jona on Sat, Nov 22, 2008 at 17:12:56

Maurine, I'm moving back to my house. My ex-remarried and moved to a new house so I'm back in to the house I help build. YEAH!!!!!

Your Santa Run sounds fun. If I remember, your sister is just starting out with running/races.??

From Kelli on Sun, Nov 23, 2008 at 15:44:52

Great run!!! And thanks for the dinner suggestion, it was good (and almost empty--good to go to a restaurant in Provo during a BYU game!) Scott got the chicken and steak marsala and I got whatever was right below it on the menu (polo something or other---the waiter recommended it). Then we shared and they were both VERY good!!! Oh, and he got calamari---yuck!!!!

From jona on Sun, Nov 23, 2008 at 16:24:49

Sorry about that Calamari Kelli.

I have only had it once, and YUCK! But, others seemed to like it, so I just figured that I'm just not a tentacle fishy eater.

I think you guys had my two favorites. Polo Rosa Maria and Marsala Chicken. Yum yum yum.

From Kelli on Sun, Nov 23, 2008 at 20:05:35

It looked like little miniature octopus! I told him he was eating the little pink octopus from Finding Nemo!

Anyway, thanks for the suggestion! It was nice to go somewhere different for a change! i think we will head to Prove more often, there are a few places we need to try.

That's some wicked speed Jon!!

Nice run!

From jona on Sun, Nov 23, 2008 at 21:23:15

Kelli, that is all I could think about with the little octopus tentacles. NOT for ME!

Thanks Teena, doubt its anything to special compared to a healthy speedster like you. :-)

Met a few people up in Lehi and ran the Jordan River Parkway trail. Nice run. There were people I didn't know, so SORRY if I miss your name. But people I did know, or just met were Kelli and her husband Scott, and Tyler S and his wife Kellie, and Michelle L., Smooth and I'm pretty sure I saw Maurine, I think she got there late.

Michelle and Tyler and Scott took off for some speed work about mile 6. I was not able to keep up. Wish I was in better shape, then I could think about staying within shouting distance.

Was nice seeing everyone out there. Kelli - Next time I will have Swedish fish for you, my move has got me all turned around and I forgot to bring them.

Good run guys, thanks for dragging this old guy along.

PS - I just got back from my moms house, my sister made me a TuTu for this coming Saturday Nutcracker 5k.  Who is going to be there?

Jon,

That is an awesome pace for so many miles!! You did great (albeit you forgot Kelli's swedish fish).

Michelle, Tyler and Scott must have been cruising!!

Both Kelli(e)s and Smooth were there!! Stink!! I missed out big time.

From jona on Sat, Nov 29, 2008 at 14:52:12

Thanks Teena, those speedsters were going for a while. I think they wanted 6 min pace for 2 miles then rest then 5 something pace for 2 miles. They are fast.

Missed you being there Teena. You'll be back with us soon though!

From Kelli on Sat, Nov 29, 2008 at 15:40:36

Ah, I forgot the Swedish Fish!!! Now I am mad at you....kidding! I really enjoyed my pumpkin muffin, nummy!

Scott says you are fast! He says once you have the time to work on endurance you are going to be kicking his butt! Look at what you accomplish in the limited time you have to run. You are an amazing runner! AND your legs are like twice as long as Scott's, so you will waste him!

From jona on Sat, Nov 29, 2008 at 16:32:16

Kelli, Scott is way to kind. I do need to get out more often. This casual running is going to get me injured.

From Kelli on Sat, Nov 29, 2008 at 16:36:05

Casual runners do not run as fast as you do! If only we all had the time we needed to do everything we wanted!!

Scott is not kind, believe me. He means it if he says it.

From jona on Sat, Nov 29, 2008 at 16:47:14

Oh he is to kind.

When Michelle and Tyler and Scott took off I wanted to stay with them, but just didn' have it in me. Maybe someday.

I do want to log more weekday miles in in this next month. Will be good for me leading up to Painters.

From Kelli on Sat, Nov 29, 2008 at 16:49:00

I could give you a challenge----the Beat Kelli Challenge So She Will Never Chick Me Again. Just log more miles than me each week (should not be hard, I had a whoppin' 22 this week). We can RACE to the most miles.

From tarzan on Mon, Dec 01, 2008 at 19:30:37

Went to the gym and did about 30 min of spin, then ran a few miles.  First mile was slow (8:20), then I was wanting to see how long it would take me to get it down under 8.  That is harder than I thought.  At mile 2 or somewhere near there I was about 8:10, then by mile 3 I was down to 8.  I new I was under by 3.5.  Dang mind games!

I want to increase my speed, so I cranked it up to 6:40 pace here and there.  Tried to keep that pace for at least .25 miles at a time.  Gym was hot!

From jona on Thu, Dec 04, 2008 at 13:20:47

Sorry, no I was under 8 min pace. It just takes a long time/hard work to make up 20, 30 seconds.

From Kelli on Thu, Dec 04, 2008 at 13:23:46

Oh, I get it now. Those mind games are the only way to run on a treadmill, otherwise it is boring!

And watch out there calling 8:20 a slow mile. That is not SLOW.

NICE tutu! What winter weight? It's the baggy shirt. May be you can wear some skin-tight leotard underneath the tutu. I'm sure you'll just fly or prance away. Have fun at the race. Do you get a nutcracker trophy if you win?

From Kelli on Fri, Dec 05, 2008 at 17:21:06

Winter weight?? Whatever!! Looks GREAT.

From jona on Fri, Dec 05, 2008 at 17:51:59

Smooth, LMHOROF! Anytime the words leotard, tutu and fly and PRANCE get used inside two sentences I don't want them to be describing me! LOL

I don't know if they give a nutcracker trophy to the winner. I'll watch the winner and see what she/he picks up.

Kelli, you and Smooth are tooooo nice. I see all kinds of winter weight. I'm like a dog putting on the winter coat, just keeping warm.

Tomorrow is going to be fun!!

Good luck on your race tomorrow. It is tomorrow right?

From tarzan on Fri, Dec 05, 2008 at 20:14:02

Yeah, ran the Nutcracker, with TuTu. Had a good run. I say this all the time, but I feel it more now, I need to run more often. I was loosing juice the last mile.

Splits looked like this:

Mile 1 : 7:19

Mile 2 : 6:34

Mile 3 : 7:38

last .1 : 5:18 (had a little speed left)

Over all pace was 7:08

Happy to report that Scott, Kelli' husband finished 3rd overall mens. He ran in just under 21. That guy is strong. Their daughter Ashley took first in her age group. Yeah for them.

The race was fun, a lot of TuTu's. I think the first place guy was from Runners corner, as well as first place girls. "Army Runners" son took 3rd overall. Fast kid, 13 years old.

What a great day, I'll write more later, headed out for some regular running miles now.

******************** AFTER Run Run ************************

Needed to get a few more miles in, Made it 6 miles.  Was difficult.  While I was running I got a bad cramp in the middle of my chest.  YUCK.  Reminded me that I had had a cramp the whole time I was running the 5k.  The 5k was a side stich, but the after run run in the middle just under the breast.  It was really uncomfortable.  About mile 3.8 I walked.  That one stunk.  Oh well, I'm alive.

Posted some of my pictures for ya! The ones I got of you guys finishing the race were crappy, I took them too soon and you were too far out, then my old camera was not ready for another shot until you were finished. Live and learn, and buy a new camera!

Lovely tu-tu. I ran this race last year, but I bet the weather was much better this year. Your splits show the hills of the course. Good job going out and getting more miles in and congrats on going sub 22.

From marion on Sat, Dec 06, 2008 at 18:21:28

Awesome race! You are one speedy dude! I think the tu-tu has added speed factor! What is with the chest pain dude?

From jona on Sat, Dec 06, 2008 at 18:35:24

Kelli - You have a fantastic family! You totally would do better than you think on the 5k.

Michelle - Thanks, those make up miles were tough, physically and mentally. You would have won the whole thing I think. I was wondering if I should have held back a little more on the first hill and used the energy on the last mile. Wasn't very close between me and #8, or back to #10 so probably doesn't matter.

Marion - Way to kind. I don't know what is up with the pain. It was hard to breath. Silly me, I was even mapping out in my head what key strokes I would have to hit on my cell if something really bad started happening. What an old man!

From marion on Sat, Dec 06, 2008 at 18:38:37

Indigestion maybe? You really maybe should have that checked! I am a nervous nellie, I know, but some things should be checked out! ;) Be sure to wear the TuTu WHEN you go see the doc!

From Teena on Sat, Dec 06, 2008 at 21:39:00

Jon,

AWESOME RACE!! You totally kicked some major TuTu! 2nd in division? That is so sweet. Then putting in extra miles! Very nice.

About that pain in your chest. I get that sometimes too. For me, I believe it is related to acid reflux because I never get it when I'm on prevacid. But ... who knows. Listen to Marion ... she's a smart nervous nellie.

Congrats again on the race.

From jona on Sun, Dec 07, 2008 at 14:51:47

Marion, Teena - I will think about getting it checked if it comes around again. I don't think it was indigestion, maybe something from the lack of eating. I was operating on little food when the big pain kicked in. I think I had had a small bowl of chili Friday at noon and then a personal pizza from Target/Pizza Hut Fri Night. Thursday wasn't much better. I should probably start watching what/how much I'm eating! (Duh)

From Smooth on Sun, Dec 07, 2008 at 15:45:11

Jon, WOW GREAT RACE!!! CONGRATS on taking home the "hardware". 5K's are tough. Good for you to run the extra miles post-race. I did that once and I couldn't get more than 6 miles in. The chest crump could be from the diaphram which was put to the test during intense racing. Just my wild guess. I don't know anything about nervous indigestion. Don't you love it when people give you diagnosis? You know your body best.

From montelepsy on Sun, Dec 07, 2008 at 15:53:55

Congrats on being number two!

From jona on Sun, Dec 07, 2008 at 19:09:33

Smooth - Thanks. I was thinking it could be just the diaphragm thing also. Like you I only got 6 miles post race. Started out thinking I would go more, but then that pain kicked in and made for yuck miles so I turned on my 6 mile route instead of continuing to 8.

Thanks Mike, Maybe next year you can make it down to UT county and run with us.

From jona on Tue, Dec 09, 2008 at 02:30:37

Are you/we going to get a long(er) run planned sometime? We don't have a ton of time before Painters.

From Kelli on Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 14:41:46

We are shooting for NEXT Saturday, not this one. This week we have a b-ball game at 9, dance recital at 10:30, b-ball game at 1, dinner party at 5. I hope Scott and I can fit a run in there sometime, but it will have to be in "our own backyard" this week.

I am not sure about Colby's game time for next Saturday, but I think it is at 3. If that is the case, we are in for next Saturday (the 20th). How does that sound?

From jona on Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 16:43:55

It is my IT band. It is feeling really good, but that is because I have taken a week off. I go into the Dr. on Tues. so I will rest until then.

I love the picture with you and your girls. It is great!!!

Nice pace the last two days!

From jona on Thu, Dec 11, 2008 at 15:33:35

Hey Britta,

I'm sorry to hear about your IT band! I hope you heal up quick. Are you going to Dr "T"?

Thanks for the kind words about my girls! They sure make daddy look good.

From britta on Thu, Dec 11, 2008 at 16:52:58

Yes, Dr. T. I think your required to go to him as a member of this blog!!!!Ha ha!

From jona on Thu, Dec 11, 2008 at 17:06:54

Britta, the only ones required are the women of this blog. And I'll bet you are having a bunch of friends "volunteering" to go with you for "support"! LOL!

From britta on Fri, Dec 12, 2008 at 15:35:38

I haven't had anyone volunteer yet.

I have never meet Dr. T so I am feeling a little nervouse because of all of the hipe. I will put in my evaluation after I go.

From jona on Fri, Dec 12, 2008 at 17:12:42

Britta, I'm sure if you posted on a couple blogs that you were going you would have some volunteers.

The whole thing cracks me up. I guess the guy is more than the bag of chips! :-)

Decided to run up Murdock Canal Rd.  None paved roads are harder to run on.  At about mile 10, I got a text msg and started to walk to return the message.  Forgot to turn my watch off, so my pace was really slow in that mile/2.  Other than that, I'm tired, YEAH, got 13 in!

Oh, and the wind heading North, just one thing to say about about that.... in the now famous word of Teena "STINK!"

Have a great day all!

From jona on Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 14:12:45

Teena, pretty sweet! I was thinking this morning how I look forward to getting up to higher miles. So that 13 isn't as hard on me. Will be nice when 16-18 are the longer runs.

Britta, I hope some can get together. I've been talking to Kelli about it. More the better right? I don't know how far everyone is thinking. I'll probably be planning on 15.

From jona on Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 02:37:34

Maurine, I've always like bakers dozen. Never hurts to have an extra of something from the baker!

Kelli, I'm trying to be better about getting out without you having to nag. :-) I wasn't being dangerous with my texting. I still had one eye on the road. :-D

Oh, your texting comment made me remember, I was on the canal road that goes from Orem up to point of the mountain, there is a point the AF Temple is near by, I stopped a couple out on a walk and had them take a picture of me w/temple in the background. One of those Ahhhh, beautiful moments on a run! I'll have to upload the picture to Facebook.

From Kelli on Wed, Dec 17, 2008 at 00:04:33

RUN, JON, RUN!!!!!

I do not think we need any water dropped for Saturday. No one is going to run 20! Do you think the trail will be okay to run on? It is gonna snow the rest of the week, but not Saturday (it is gonna be freezing cold, though!) Maybe we should go check it out.

Have you talked your friend into coming? I will run with her. My knee is bugging me some today, so I will not be going too fast!

From jona on Wed, Dec 17, 2008 at 15:48:00

Hey Kelli, I'll try and get out tonight. I was trying to talk my friend into coming with us on our run Sat, she said that she is just uncomfortable with the speed. I'll go running with her and her group once and she will see there is no speed to worry about. She even knows "Smooth". I invited her and her group, maybe one day!

From tarzan on Wed, Dec 17, 2008 at 16:01:16

Jon - you might want to tell her that Leslie and I run between 11:30-12:30 a mile - which is pretty slow.

From jona on Wed, Dec 17, 2008 at 17:33:43

Maurine, I told her we have people running at a wide variety of speeds and distances (I think I even said that there are some that run 11-12 min pace).

I'll get her out. Once good weather hits she will be biking. (Tri-girl!) She loves to bike! I'll still work on her.

From jona on Thu, Dec 18, 2008 at 13:10:59

I've heard that before too, I've just forgotten it. I can remember my mom saying that to me. Had I said that to you I would have been meaning that your being a smart alec, or sarcastic.

From marion on Thu, Dec 18, 2008 at 22:21:06

Do they plow the trail? Is there a gym we could take over. FRB runners on 15 treadmills! We could play rocky music and the first one to 10 miles wins!

From Kelli on Thu, Dec 18, 2008 at 22:41:12

I do not know if they plow the trail. Scott ran on the parkway up here and it actually was plowed. They also plow all of the trails in our neighborhood. BUT, I bet it is not plowed.

I say we show up, if it does not work out, we will all go to breakfast in our cute, sexy running tights like hoochie mamas!

Went up to Lehi and ran with a friend and a couple of her friends.  We ran more hills than I am used to.  There pace was slower than mine, so I would run out ahead for a bit then turn back to them, then go back out.  That was hard on the up hills.

I finished with 13, everyone else was around 9-11.  Time was way slow, so decided early on in the run that I wasn't going to look at the clock, just the distance.

43:24/7:54 pace including cool down .5 miles.  Ok, didn't really cool down, there was this guy that is much faster than I and he slowed and I saw I was catching him, so I had to continue a faster pace after I had already run a lap SLOW.  So it went like this 1 lap slow cool down, oh, theres that fast guy, FAST, caught him, ok, now I can slow down, ran one SLOW again.  Silly I know, I couldn't catch him if he were running.

Our family looks forward to it every year because it is really something we never do. Anyway it is fun for younger and older kids. If I think of anymore your kids might like I will pass them along.

Ran around the old Word Perfect Buildings, down 800 E. Then back home. I'm amazed how much it slows you down to be looking down at the ground when your running on the snow edge streets. The las mile the street had a little more shoulder and less cars so I was able to relax and look up instead of down. Pace increased. Felt good. Legs are feeling heavy. I think its time to stop the soda. So, Jan 2 NO SODA, no caffiene until after Painters.

Did you have a good Christmas?

From Teena on Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 13:47:13

I had a great Christmas. What about you DB?

Kelli didn't answer her phone, but I called one of my friends who works for Scott and he says he hasn't seen Scott for a few days as well. He thought they might have gone to Mesquite. He was going to ask around and let me know. So they are probably just partying!! :)

From britta on Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 14:11:53

Way to not set yourself up for failure! So smart. Do you like NFL or college football better?

From jona on Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 15:41:19

Teena, I just can't imagine Kelli "partying" in Mesquite. She knows the value of her money to well to party in Mesquite. Well I hope all is well with them. I'll let you know if I hear anything, please keep me posted.

Christmas was good. It was a good first try, and I think the kids all had a good time.

Britta, I tend to like them both. Pro is certainly more fun when the playoffs start. I can't remember not watching some of the Bowl games on New Years Day. Good to sit around and enjoy the games with family and friends, and have some good food. (with Soda to drink). :-) Are you a football fan?

From Teena on Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 15:46:31

DB,

Partying can mean many different things to many different people. Sleeping in, a long nap, watching movies ... that could be a total party!! :) I'm not exactly sure where they were at but just heard from Kelli via my friend Steve and they are on their way home!! She got a good laugh at us all trying to hunt her down. If she weren't so stinkin' awesome we wouldn't have had to go to such extremes!! :) :) :)

I'm sure Christmas was awesome for your kids!!

From jona on Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 17:44:42

Teena, I was just teasing about Kelli partying. It is pretty funny how we are like brothers and sisters on this blog, "where is Kelly, haven't heard from her, she isn't answering her phone........" Always feels good to be loved!

From britta on Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 21:13:37

I don't not like football but I would never turn it on without my husband. He really likes college so that is what we usually watch.

From Kelli on Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 23:46:23

You guys are funny!!! And, Jon, you are oh so right!! I pinch pennies so hard the SCREAM!!!! Scott's grandma loves to play BINGO (twice a day, in fact), but I would not go cause I am too cheap! Scott's mom always pays for me, so I figure it is her money and I can have fun, but I can not part with my own money that easily!!!

I was in St George when I checked my cell phone and saw that Teena had called earlier! i called her back to let her know I was okay----headed into Costco for a PIZZA lunch! NUMMY, and the last one for a while!!

Great run, BTW, and very fast! Scott tried the whoel quitting soda thing. He did not have any for almost 3 years, then he drank some coke on New Years, and that was all she wrote! He says he felt absolutely no difference at all, so why give it up? L:et me know how that goes for you!

From leslie on Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 23:52:39

I agree with Jon, it's nice to have the family back together!!:)

From Teena on Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 00:01:18

Dr. Toronto says that there is nothing wrong with soda per se, as long as you are sticking to a healthy diet otherwise. He says the whole not being able to consume as much oxygen, etc. is bologna.

From Cal on Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 00:12:26

hey jon, i've read a ton of articles on soda and running... none of which have seemed overly convincing to me. but personally i feel like it's made a difference to give it up. so go for it, if you like.

From jona on Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 11:59:40

Ahhhh, family! Welcome home sis! We all missed you.

As far as the soda goes, I can feel it in my running. I feel better during my run when I am soda free. It seems when I am on soda I have more runs where I feel like my legs are heavy, feels like my leg muscles work harder. Another side effect at least for me is that I drink less water, and I already don't drink enough water.

Another point for me on soda and caffeine. I know this is crazy, sounds so wrong, but I want caffeine to have an effect on me when I take it. So sometimes I would like a caffeinated soda to help stay awake, or caffeine (and lets not give me hate mail because of this) towards the end of a race (Excedrin). If I drink caffeinated drinks (soda) I don't feel like caffeine, when I want it, has much effect. And likewise I want soda to taste like a treat and right now I am drinking so much its losing its "treat" appeal.

Just my two pennies, I know its not for everyone.

From leslie on Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 12:07:54

I think it sounds like a good plan! Now I am off to the Sev to go get a diet coke! Good luck John!

From Kelli on Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 14:22:40

I think that caffeine thing makes sense. I do drink diet coke every once in a while (mostly when i am starving, but do not need to eat yet, the carbonation keeps me full). I also get some whenever we go to the movies, it just belongs with popcorn! All that said, caffeine never seems to effect me in a drink. I can not take Excedrin, it totally makes my body freak out!! But I could drink a liter or two of diet coke and NOTHING!!!!

Good luck with your TEST, we will all await the results!

From jona on Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 14:59:18

Thanks Leslie!

Kelli, The "test" will be a success. You all won't notice much as far as time or distance, but I will notice it while I'm running. Every year I stop soda at the begging of the running season, this year I'm running a race MUCH earlier in the year so having to stop my winter soda binge early. :-(

From MichelleL on Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 15:15:33

I try to stay away from the caffeine because it gets in the way of me taking naps when my body tells me to, or to go to bed early when my body is tired. It overrides those signals for me. Of course, during tax season, the caffeine gets me through, but then I detox cold Turkey April 16th.

From jona on Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 15:38:16

Michelle, I wonder about that effect of caffeine as well. Another thing I wonder about, but seems to be hard to gauge is if it effect quality of sleep. Maybe I will figure some way to rate my sleep and rate through the "drinking" and non-drinking seasons.

From Sunnyrun on Tue, Jan 06, 2009 at 12:08:30
