Short-Term Running Goals:

Stay healthy!

Would like to BQ - need to shave 23 minutes off PR.

Long-Term Running Goals:

Keep running.

When I started running my wish that turned into a goal was to qualify for Boston. Just so I could say "I qualified for Boston."

AFTER BQ, I think I will do some Tri events.  For sure some Half Ironman events, and see where that takes me.

Well well well!  Got out of bed for a change.  Ran a 7 mile loop that I used to run a couple years ago.  It starts off with a hill at the begging so my pace is always slow to start with and then add the hill and its sure to be a slow first mile.  As I got going I thought about how I would like the run to go, speed wise.  I settled in on first mile warm up (hill), second and third mile to be better than marathon goal pace (7:25 mpm), rest for the fourth, MGP on fifth and maybe sixth (thought I would have to be flexible and see how I was doing), then wind up with MGP or better on seventh.  So, here is how it all worked out.  Looks like I need to try a little harder.

1 - 8:22

2 - 7:16 (this does have some down hill in it, so I knew I would be ok on the MGP)

3 - 7:16 (I was really trying to keep it steady, looks like I made that)

4 - 7:41 "rest"  I was actually liking this pace.  Felt good

5 - 7:29 (I found it hard to push after resting.  And this is a section that is slight up.  Slight enough I hesatate even mentioning it.)

6 - 7:51 "rest" I had a hard time with the mile before, I felt like I had one more good faster mile in me this morning, so decided to take this one easy and not let myself wimp on the last one.

7 - 7:03 I pushed pretty good here.  Not top speed, but felt like the effort was there while I was tired.  Hope that kinda thing pays off someday.

Overall, good run.  Wanted the whole run to be closer to MGP.  My left hip/very tip top maybe even above my hamstring is hurting a little.  I've been stretching it a lot.

Careful with that area. That extra high hamstring areas been a pain for me.

From jona on Tue, Apr 28, 2009 at 10:51:47 from 69.27.13.147

Michelle, I know that hamstring area has given you some serious problems. I keep watching your blog hoping that you will be getting better. Injuries STINK!

I've been trying to figure out how to better stretch that area. If you have info your willing to share, I would appreciate it.

Have you been able to ice the area at all?

Good run. I hope you can avoid injury.

I'm with Maurine, I hope I can avoid injury too. I think I will be ok. Oh, no ice, I think I would have to freeze my whole mid section to ice that deep area.

AWESOME workout! Check out that last split. You finished STRONG!

Have you done the stretch where you cross one leg over the other like the number "4", then lift to stretch the hamstring? Another good stretch is a yoga stretch sitting (straight spine posture) with one knee bended on the floor and hug the other knee with it crossing over the bended knee, then gently twist your body while hugging the leg to stretch that pyriformis.

I find using "the stick" to roll out the long muscles by the tendon help too.

Smooth, I haven't tried those stretches. The first one, cross the legs while sitting, laying flat on back??? I'll try them! Thank you!

Jon,

How's the left hip/hamstring? Where are you and Kelly running tomorrow? We're gonna run Lehi JRP rain or shine, meeting at 6am. Be fun if you can come.

From jona on Fri, May 01, 2009 at 12:06:07 from 69.27.13.147

Hey Smooth, thanks for the heads up on the JRP run. I will see if I can make it. Yesterday my neck stiffened up. I could hardly turn my head. Don't know what happened, but......I skipped running this morning, but am thinking of trying early this evening. If I don't see you tomorrow, have a great run! Maybe will be able to say Hi at Stake Conf Adult session tomorrow eve. Kelly is in a group singing a special number, so I am inviting myself to your conference.

DB,

Go buy one of those therma-care neck patches. They do wonders. Seriously!

From jona on Fri, May 01, 2009 at 12:11:01 from 69.27.13.147

Therma whata? Is it like a heat patch? Is heat the way to go?

From Teena on Fri, May 01, 2009 at 12:13:01 from 67.177.20.13

Yep, it's a heat patch. If your neck feels like it has a kink it, then that is what you need. Seriously, they are awesome. They usually come in three packs for roughly $6. One patch lasts 8 hours. You can get them at Target, WalMart, almost anywhere.

From Smooth on Fri, May 01, 2009 at 12:17:05 from 71.36.87.147

I have some salonpas patches. They're medicated anesthetic patches sold in WalMart or any store where they sell bandaides, pain meds.

I've slept with an electric heating pad under the neck when I had a "whip-lash" last year. It soothes and relaxes the muscles.

From Smooth on Fri, May 01, 2009 at 12:19:31 from 71.36.87.147

Have Kelly massage the kinks for ya. I will see you tomorrow night. Can't wait to hear Kelly sing. Wow, she's multi-talented.

From jona on Fri, May 01, 2009 at 12:23:40 from 69.27.13.147

I think I will run up to Target and get a pack of those ThermaCare patches. I did a quick look up on the internet and found a coupon for $3 off a package. If they offer some relief I am there!

Good info Smooth and TJ! Thank you!

From Teena on Fri, May 01, 2009 at 12:31:53 from 67.177.20.13

You'll be glad you did!! I used to get neck kinks all of the time. Then I went to a down pillow and have had very few problems since. :)

Down, not memory foam? Seems like memory foam is all the rage.
