When I started running my wish that turned into a goal was to qualify for Boston. Just so I could say "I qualified for Boston."

AFTER BQ, I think I will do some Tri events.  For sure some Half Ironman events, and see where that takes me.

Well, I have been avoiding this all day.  I am very disappointed with myself.  Good or bad I need to own up.  I figure if I at least write this out I can learn some things.

So, here are some highlights/comments on some of the different sections of the race.

 

Early miles 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 : Everything seems fine, my left foot was hurting a little on the ball of my foot just behind my little toe and the toe next to that.  But everything seems fine.  Seemed good. If anything, I felt like we were a little fast for those miles.  Reality now back at the office looking at the splits we were at most 25 sec ahead of schedule.  And that was spread over the 7 miles so not one mile to fast.

Middle miles 8,9,10,11,12,13,14,15,16,17,18,19 : This started with Veyo.  In hind sight I struggled up Veyo, and that was the start of the crash and burn.  At the time I thought, "cool, I made it up Veyo in ok time."  Looking back I think wow I was breathing harder than I should have been.  I hung with Hauns32 and group for the next 3 miles or so, but shortly after the aid station at 11 I found it very difficult to stay with them.  I faded.  I made one or two attempts to get back to them, coming close (two stides back) for about 10 15 seconds, but couldn't hold it.  This is when I knew 3:15 was gone.  At mile 15 I had my first sign of things to come.  The day would be one of scrap the time goals and just finish.  I've always told people that I would crawl on bloody stumps to finish, no DNF! 

Early in 15 this is the routine my race became: run as long as I can, calves would cramp up, walk for 20-30 seconds, run again.

Late miles 20,21,22,23,24,25,26, finish : I would think my calves where getting better and I would try and pick up the pace just a little and they would cramp immediately. About mile 20 or so I could see blood coming through the top of my shoe.  Lovely!  Proves to be just blister on top of blister on top of blister.  Should have used my other shoes.  Opted for these shoes because I had more miles in them, felt like they were broken in more.  Oh well, those will heal just fine, that pain is very temporary. 

The finish line was right there, I was in the bleacher section and my calves got charlie horses, I couldn't move.  I wanted to curse!  I was glad to be able to not fall over.  In hind sight I find it kinda funny how with the one step I could take I went closer to the fence so that if I started to fall over I could lean against the stupid fence.  15 - 20 seconds of massaging the charlie horses in my calves stopped and I made my way across the finish line.  Stupid calves.

Feelings of failure and letting people down were very strong.  (still are).

SOOOOOOOoooooo, I'm holding to the fact that I finished, I overcame a lot of muscle cramping and I came in 3 min and 20 seconds faster than my previous marathon best.  I will have to think about all this for awhile before I make to many more decisions about lessons learned.  Some of my thoughts are about being more serious about the training, better quality training, being realistic about what training I am doing compared to the goals I am setting.  Outside distractions, how they effect training/races and how they can effect the training and goals.

Feeling better about things, I'm finding the positives.  I did PR, I did persevere through what was a tough run for me.  I am thinking I will continue to try for a time that will give me the BQ.

Jon- I am sorry this did not turn out the way you wanted :( Please try not to dwell on it, beyond figuring out what needs to change. I feel your calf pain :p On the MAJOR up side, you get to have the best day ever VERY soon, so who cares about a silly marathon. You get to marry your sweet Kelly EXACTLY how you'd like to :) You are SO very blessed! Poop on St George. It is over and done and now you are on to MUCH bigger and WAY better things :D Life is EVER so so good !!!

You did what you could that day and no more was to be had...move on...I can't imaging anybody that knows you would be disappointed in the race.

I notice that its a PR by the way. Hellloooooo!

It's gone...now learn from it.

Jon ~ I feel your pain literally. I'm serious. I had charlie horse on the calves big time. I have a humongous blister on the ball of my left foot. I was mad, sad, glad it was over....blah, blah, blah. But you know what? We can hold our heads high and be proud that we finished without crawling on bloody stumps. Don't ever feel that you have let anybody down. You have not failed. Heck! you PR by 3+ minutes! That's cause for celebration! I'd say EXCELLENT JOB! WAY to persevere and tough it out! Now you can turn your focus to the BIG BIG DAY!

Sorry you didn't get the race you wanted it to be. But congratulations on a PR and on toughing it out. Get over the disappointment and hold your head up high.

Jon, that cramping is such a pain in the...you know what. Remember this: Scott was on track for a 3:12 finish at mile 21 and he started to cramp. He finally hobbled in at 3:38. Cramping is not a minor issue, you did your best under the circumstances. You are not a failure, a marathon is not a pass or fail test!!

You got a PR, so that is good! Now you know you have cramping issues and you have a great person to go to for advice on that one! Let his experience help you, he has a lot of it!!!!

And Veyo sucks! I run hills all the time and I flew up it last year, but it conquered me this year, too. For a few miles after the darn hills I was trying to catch my breath and get back into a rhythm. Everyone talks about how horrible the hill is, but they forget to mention that it is only the beginning of the hills, they do not stop for miles after that!!!

You will get that BQ. You will.

Thanks ALL! I'm seeing more and more of the positive things I can take from the race with every passing day. Thank you all for encouraging me to learn from my efforts! My general thinking is that I want to keep trying for BQ. Does anyone know of a Saturday BQ'r coming up? I would like to take advantage of my current conditioning.

I am SO looking forward to the BIG day!

1st - Congratulations on finishing. I know that feeling of disappointment of not reaching your goal. I felt it only a few weeks ago. But you definitely have the right perspective on things. You did finish, you did PR, and you are already looking for another opportunity to BQ, which means you are there mentally. You'll do. Find another qualifier and I'll come run it with you. Together we'll quality, for sure.

2nd - Do you take salt pills when you run? Succeed Caps are the best. I take them once an hour during marathons and have never cramped.

3rd - I can't believe you are getting married in just over a week. The time has flown by. I'm really happy for you guys and hope you have perfect weather and a perfect day.

Jun - Thank you! I'm trying to keep the right perspective on everything.

I've never used "salt pills"/Succeed Caps. What are they, where do I get them? Funny, Kelly saw me at mile 19 and ask if I wanted beef jerky (that is a high sodium thing she has had success with eating on long bike rides) and I turned it down. I SHOULD have taken it! I didn't think that salt could be leaving me that fast. Guess I'm learning more about myself all the time.

Scott takes "salt pills" every 45 minutes during long runs and marathons, although I am not sure what they are called. We got them at Wasatch running.

Hey Jon, I'm sorry things didn't turn out quite as planned for you (either). Had my own share of disappointments, and am still suffering some weird leg swelling. It was fun running with the group, until I dropped back at around mile 5.

Keep at it, and it will get easier and the times will get faster!
