Stay healthy!

Would like to BQ - need to shave 23 minutes off PR.

Long-Term Running Goals:

Keep running.

When I started running my wish that turned into a goal was to qualify for Boston. Just so I could say "I qualified for Boston."

AFTER BQ, I think I will do some Tri events.  For sure some Half Ironman events, and see where that takes me.

We were scheduled to run 10 miles and hold marathon pace. Last week was 18 miles, next week is 20.

Kelly has come a long way. She used to have a hard time holding 10:30 pace for a mile, today she averaged the whole 10 miles at less than 10:20. I think our intervals on Wed's are helping bring the speed up. I'm worried about injury with her. She has some hip soreness since last Sat long run. It's like the very top of the IT band. I hope that having a lower mile week between long runs will help settle that down.

YEAH KELLY!!!!! I hope the soreness goes away and is nothing that will bother her. Almost there....

From Jon A on Thu, Aug 11, 2011 at 14:32:37 from 107.0.7.18

Kelli, I hope so too!

Her hips are bothering her. I fear we didn't take it slow enough building up to higher miles.

We have a 20 mile run scheduled for Sat. Hopefully things don't worsen.

Google Yoga hip openers and have her do A LOT of them!!!!

From Jon A on Mon, Aug 15, 2011 at 11:09:49 from 107.0.7.18

Thanks Kelli, I'll have her give it a try.

From Smooth on Tue, Aug 23, 2011 at 18:35:21 from 174.27.193.15

How's Kelly's hip doing? How was the 20 miler?

I haven't been on the blog much lately and missed what's going on with you two. Hope all is well!

From Jon A on Tue, Aug 23, 2011 at 20:18:56 from 107.0.7.18

Hey Smooth,

Kelly's hip is doing ok. It hurts for a few days after a long run, then is noticeable for a few more days. Then a long run starts it again.

I'm going to have her try some more of the "hip openers" Kelli recommended. She tried one, but she was to flexible, and that seemed to have no effect.

Anyway, 20 miler went yuck. I got sick and we didn't make it. We are scheduled for another 20 soon, may have to adjust the schedule to make sure we get enough 20's in.

This just hasn't been our year. But that is ok, smiles for all!

:-)

Has she tried foam rolling the ITB? Ice bath and faithful foam rolling and diligent stretching seems to help with soreness post long run. If she's too flexible, may be some strength training exercise such as hip abductor/adductor would help!

We have a little under 6 weeks so there's time for one or two 20 milers in.

Sorry it has been a bummer year. You two have such great attitude. Hope things continue to improve for ya! :)

From Jon A on Wed, Aug 24, 2011 at 10:09:52 from 107.0.7.18

Thanks for the advice Smooth, we did some strength training last night that included abductor/adductor exercises. I committed last week that I would regularly strength train. Kelly always goes with me to strength train, so I will get her to do those exercises as well.

Your awesome Smooth!

Too flexible??? She needs to spend some time with Wendy, my yoga teacher! We should have had them work some stuff out at the RHPC race, but i guess she was not hurting way back then, huh?

From Jon A on Thu, Aug 25, 2011 at 10:09:45 from 107.0.7.18

Kelli, I know "to flexible" sounds stupid, but she try's that one (hip opener) exercise where you lay on your back and cross your leg and pull your leg up towards your chest, and I think she could pull her leg all the way behind her and the only thing that would happen is pull her joint out of socket.

Back at RHPC is just about when it started hurting.

The abductor/adductor exercise seemed to help the other night. I'm going to have her do those like every other night.

From Kelli on Thu, Aug 25, 2011 at 12:29:28 from 71.219.67.82

Wendy is "too flexible" as well, so I get it. She could fold herself into a knot!

How about Pigeon? Google that and have her do that. The more flexible you are, the further forward you can push your bent leg. That is a good one that might help!

From Jon A on Thu, Aug 25, 2011 at 14:55:32 from 107.0.7.18

WOW, that would KILL me! Ouch! NO way I try that. But I will print it and have Kelly give it a try.

From Smooth on Wed, Aug 31, 2011 at 23:35:31 from 174.27.211.63

How's it going?

From Kelli on Thu, Sep 08, 2011 at 19:21:14 from 71.219.67.175

HI!!!! How are things going with the training and Kellie's woes and pains?

From Smooth on Wed, Sep 14, 2011 at 17:32:09 from 174.27.201.64

We need update! :)

From Jon A on Thu, Sep 15, 2011 at 10:34:20 from 107.0.7.18

Hey Smooth! Sorry about the lack of response. Our world, well at least this year, is really kinda yuck, not very many highs, and the lows seem to get worse.

We are looking to finish SGM, and if we cross that line under 24 hours we will feel good. :-) Kelly is so strong, she will be fine, she is MORE ready than me! I keep trying to talk her into just taking off and leaving me to the long walk, she just wont go for that.

From Kelli on Thu, Sep 15, 2011 at 15:48:58 from 71.219.67.175

There is something to be said for running a marathon together, I promise!!! And it will be a HIGH that way!

From Jon A on Thu, Sep 15, 2011 at 17:09:06 from 107.0.7.18

Kelli, I would rather run with Kelly than not. :-) I hope there is a HIGH when we cross, that would be sweet.

I've just struggled this year, I'm mentally not in the game, I find/hit the "wall" on any run after about 7-8 miles (and I haven't even run a marathon since SGM 10). I made it 20 a couple weekends ago, really struggled and had walk breaks. :(

From Kelli on Thu, Sep 15, 2011 at 22:46:07 from 71.219.67.175

Walk breaks are allowed and GOOD for ya! No worries. You two just go and enjoy the race together. If you walk, you walk, but you walk together. ;o)

I understand the heart not being in it. That is when it is time for a little break. Sometimes a tiny break is enough, so far it has worked for me. but I have a feeling the break this year will be long. I am tired of racing, just plain tired of the stress of having to get in the miles and hit the paces and trying to run faster and harder all of the time. JUST TIRED!!!!!

So, see, you are not alone! ;o)

From Kelli on Thu, Sep 15, 2011 at 22:46:45 from 71.219.67.175

OH, and we really should find a time to go out to dinner. It would be great to see you guys and chat. It has been so long, too long!

From Jon A on Mon, Sep 19, 2011 at 18:51:18 from 107.0.7.18

Sounds good Kelli, we do the "go out" very good right now. :-)

From Smooth on Tue, Sep 20, 2011 at 17:11:19 from 174.27.201.64

Don't wawry! BE HAPPY!!! :):):)

I wanna go out! I'm stuck in the house with this stinkin' remodeling stuff. That's why I DO races, not RACE races! It's the only thing I get to "go out" for these days! I am grateful that I don't have a million kids and jobs and mean bosses though! So I am sympathetic to you young couples' challenges. Isn't it nice though that we are NEVER alone!!! :)

From Jon A on Tue, Sep 20, 2011 at 17:52:39 from 107.0.7.18

Smooth, Your awesome. We all need to have a little "get out" night. It would be so fun. :-)
